Tune of the Month for September 2014: William and Nancy
« on: September 01, 2014, 12:05:13 AM »

We have another winner; this time - it's William and Nancy; a morris dance tune - Lester's version is from Bledington, but of course you can record whatever version you wish - http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/tune-244-william-and-nancy-bledington.html, and Pikey's version is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnipTwDbBJ8

You'll find ABC on Lester's page, but as ever there's lots of different versions and ways of playing this ... hopefully as we'll see!

Happy playing!

Cheers,

Clive

I know the year is moving on pretty quickly, but are we really that far through already?  ::)

Here we have it on a C/F Hohner Preciosa.  I think I learnt it from the John Kirkpatrick "Plain Capers" recording...but am not sure what version that is.

That is very nice, the best sound I've heard from a Preciosa.  I see you have to play it in the bathroom to get it though!!

Fabulous arrangement as well.

Thanks very much Brian. This Preciosa was set up by Mike Rowbotham.  It is tuned fairly dry and the chords have double octave fifths, i.e. the root of the chord and 2x fifths (one higher, one lower).  I think this sounds rather nice on the Preciosa.  The large bathroom also helps  ;)

Looks like an errant '#' has crept into the URL there so the link doesn't work.  I found it the long way round though - lovely stuff!

Another William and Nancy recording; this one is played on the Preciosa Bb/Eb, so it comes out in C minor (It's minor, like Bill's, but in a different mode I think).

Sort of cheating, but here's a video of myself and Richard Arrowsmith playing for a mixture of Fool's Gambit, Pecsaetan, and Seven Champions at the Seven Champions' Ail last weekend. Richard is playing an Oakwood (model the-two-voice-8-bass-one), and I'm playing my 9 bass Erica.

Great rendition of the tune Ollie and that was a really fun dance to watch, nice to see a few different styles of the same dance managing to work together still. It's actually one dance I've never had in a group I've been a part of, perhaps Cardiff's repertoire could be encouraged to expand even further :o

I should have pointed out that the Seven Champions are a Molly team, and their involvement was entirely a piss-take.  :P
