Corelation of Melodeon players
« on: April 01, 2009, 10:01:24 PM »

On reading various threads and learning that Theo has a motor cycle tucked away, it made me wonder what are the most common second (or even first) hobbies of melodeon players.  Morris dancing doesn't count, that's an affliction but what about sailing, ski-ing, motor bikes or scale modelling and by contrast what hobbies are the antithisist of melodeon players - ball games perhaps, train spotting   ???

What's in your closet ?

 Golf.

You must be joking!

Beekeeping?   I used to keep bees, and I know of several other box players who used to, and one who still does.

Motorcycle here too, and I can think of several others round here (real world) with both boxes and bikes.

I'd have thought a fair few box players would have a liking at least for steam traction whether on rails or agricultural.

3 Harley Davidson motorcycles, 1950 Panhead, 197o shovel chopper and a 2005 springer for those who give a damn.

A 2 year old daughter, not strictly a hobby but does take up most of my time.

Along with my accordion all seem to take up my entire financial income.

Perhaps a correlation to the average age range? I'm intrigued to know if anyone shares my alternative hobby of bellydancing!  ;D

I'm a real revivalist, as well as folk music and morris dancing I am a bellringer and a steam railway lover. I'm also very keen on sailing and hiking. I did scale modelling once, but not for some time. I also play Bridge very inexpertly.

Count me in on that one.  I worked at Norton motorcycles in Wolverhampton, California, and Lichfield in the '70's.  Still own my 850 Production racer.  Also, for pure geezer factor, I own a 1976 Daimler Fleetline double-decker bus. Have found that Morris dancing is like herpes, it's not something you can drop in and out of, it's forever.

Lots of clothes....does shopping count as a hobby? ;)

Well I've recently started to try photography - stock art like historic buildings locations or textures I can use to make digital spacescapes/landscapes (haven't got the proper kit camera wise but I make -do with what I've got)....used to paint/draw now I do mainly digital art. I also briefly went through a quilting phase and I knit.

I wondered about mentioning "ringing" (church bell change-ringing, sometimes called campanology by those who don't do it.)
As a lapsed ringer I notice lots of similarities between ringers and box players, but I don't know anyone who does both.

My work is pretty all-consuming - so playing melodeon and morris is mainly what I do for fun. On the odd quiet night I restore old concertinas - got three at the moment that are taking me ages to get round to. Other than that I do like scale modelling, and walking the legs off my dog (yellow Lab) in the beautiful Peak District that sits on my doorstep. Sometime I even take a squeezebox out into the great outdoors and blast away - when there's no one else around!
