Well my main squeeze at the moment if you forgive the pun is the oboe.
Next comes MORRIS DANCING - I don't care if it is an affliction.
Then the mountains, walking these days, but lapsed climber, skier, fell runner.
Was also very keen on rallying for years (as a navigator) and if you think buying Italian boxes is an expensive business, don't even think of motor sport.

Fell running, grief, that's something that's never appealed. The closest I've come is running up or down a hill on the occasions when the terrain is such that it takes less energy than walking. The problem of course comes when you are forced to stop and is the curious inability to start again...

Earth-sciences and map-making for work.  I seem to recall there are several other "Geo" people here.
Yes - me (mining geology and hydrogeology), and our fine Theo himself (geophysics, I believe)

yes, and geology.

Now how about Freecycle?   I run the Gateshead group. Everyone should belong to their local Freecycle group where you can give away your unwanted rubbish, and you can take other peoples unwanted stuff, and all for free.  I've not acquired any melodeons this way, but I have received a banjo and an old piano accordion

Does working for a well known map making agency count too?

Otherwise, I do a whole lot of juggling/performing things, play in brass bands, quite enjoy vintage steam and fairground events occasionally, do a bit of 3D computer stuff and spend far too long staring at the Internet for no reason.

Cross country mountain biking, sadly not as much as I'd like in the last year after doing one of my knees in after a crash in May.

Guitar and fiddle, I'm also a guitar maker and woodworker. I started with chip carving/kerbschnitzen and as soon as I've got the space I'm going to start woodturning.

Single malt whisky...why's that, and wine as well, a legitimate hobby and interest but beer appreciation almost counts as a joke?. ???

Also used to enjoy fly fishing, catch and release only, but don't currently have the time or opportunity to keep it up.

Evenings
- Cooking
- Reading the Grauniad
- Web stuff

Weekends
- Cycling - mainly mountain bike
- Walking in the hills
- Garden stuff
- Used to sail dinghies

Continuing long term investigation of the products of the brewing trade, with some diversification into the distilled products from a number of the scottish islands.

Could 'antithesis' cover things I try to avoid - e.g. grass cutting and car washing ?

Work: writer, historian and carer for invalid wife.

Leisure: playing melodeon and pipe & tabor (anorak!); volunteering at Leyburn station on the Wensleydale Railway (anorak!); building a finescale model railway of Leyburn station set in 1910 (anally retentive anorak!); listening to music, especially the Grateful Dead (hippy anorak stuck in a timewarp!); reading and contributing to webfora (uber-anorak!); hill-walking; skiing (mainly off-piste); producing displays and exhibitions for a local museum; reading; collecting leather-bound classic books; walking my Newfoundland dog.

Things I used to do but no longer have enough time for: teaching and lecturing; rock climbing; caving; mountain and cave rescue; badminton playing and coaching; amateur football management; motor cycling.

Things I never have enough time for: housework, gardening and sleeping!

All the usual stuff, gardening, walking, etc.

Other musical activities: singing in choirs playing classical guitar.

Oh and I'm intructor grade in three Chinese martial arts.  There used to be a martial arts form called the Fatal Flute in which a bamboo flute was used as a wepon.

How about Mortal Melodeon, Deadly Diatonic, Agressive Accordion, Belligerent Box????

I wondered about mentioning "ringing" (church bell change-ringing, sometimes called campanology by those who don't do it.)
As a lapsed ringer I notice lots of similarities between ringers and box players, but I don't know anyone who does both.

Here's an up date on what we seem to do as melodeon players.   I've not included any other instrument playing, Morris dance or closely associated activities.  I've grouped some activities such as walking, fell walking, hill walking etc.  Some groups are a minority of one (strangely women as a hobby falls into this catergory !) (outcry from feminists) whilst others are probably under represented as being so commonly done as to not warrant mentioning ie. drinking, the underprop of all music and sessions has only scored 5 whereas walking got 9.  That can't be right in a folk community.

So the state of play so far is:-

Motor Bikes   9
Walking      9
Steam Engines   7
Beer      5
Campanology   5
Sailing      5
Photography   4
Collecting   3
Cooking      3
Cycling      3
Gardening   3
Geocache   3
Geology      3
Golf      3
Model making   3
Outdoor      3
Skiing      3
Football      2
Hockey      2
Kayaking      2
Woodwork   2
Beekeeping   1
Bellydancing   1
Bridge      1
Car Rallying   1
Fishing      1
Hen keeping   1
Juggling      1
Knitting      1
Martial Arts   1
Painting      1
Recycling      1
Snooker      1
Women      1
Writing      1

Interesting results. I wonder what would happen if you compared it with players of other instruments?
