Theme of the Month for October 2014: Tunes from Europe
« on: October 01, 2014, 12:20:48 AM »

We've had themes from France, Italy, Spain, UK, Ireland, etc; this month it's a generic theme - any tune from Europe. That opens up Belgium, Germany, Turkey and lots of other places, and also includes the European nations we have already done too!

Have a think about what to play, and have a go!

Cheers,

Clive

Might as well chuck in a couple I recorded recently while I figure out what else I could record ;D

First one is Y Fenyw Fwyn, all the way from sunny Wales: https://soundcloud.com/robotmay/y-fenyw-fwyn-the-gentle-woman (also known as the Welsh version of Roslin Castle)
Not a traditional Belgian tune but here's a Naragonia one; Les Deux Frères: https://soundcloud.com/robotmay/les-deux-fr-res-1
And for a laugh here's my attempt at Korobeiniki (the Tetris theme tune) after a whole 5 minutes of learning it (Russia's vaguely in Europe, right?): https://soundcloud.com/robotmay/korobeiniki

Oh well!  Here we go. A tune popular in Turkey for a couple of hundred years, dating from the old Ottoman Empire:  http://youtu.be/PwjSQHkTTFM Üsküdara Giderken (named for Scutari a suburb of Constantinople); and for a laugh here's an attempt at how it ended up during the disco era - 1978 - after that well know folk group Boney M got to work on it and renamed it Ra-Ra-Rasputin http://youtu.be/GKCx5BF766s

Nice recordings Alan! I really like the original version (and the Rasputin one is fun :D), and it sounds great on the box. I think that'll have to go on my to-learn list.

Greetings Roger. You know, it has turned into the box that I always pick up first. I'm really liking it.

Ha ha! Could have been worse. I might have dreamed up a Status Quo connection ...

Here's "one I prepared earlier":

Lovely tune - missing a few extra notes at the bottom. Might try it in GC in the higher octave.

Ah ha, I was planning on recording that for this month's theme too as I've only just learnt it :D
It fits really nicely on the higher octave on the inner row's key. It's a bit squeaky even with 3 voices in D/G up there but it actually sounds pretty good. Now if only I can play it through twice without a collosal cockup  :||:

Finally managed a fairly clean recording of Josefin's Dopvals! Played a bit fast because I've been having far too much fun playing it: https://soundcloud.com/robotmay/josefins-dopvals
I've learnt some rather interesting chords I haven't used before in the process of learning this tune ;D
