Profile Avatars file size
« on: October 15, 2014, 11:24:18 PM »

What is maximum file size (in Kb, not pixels) for a jpg to be used as an avatar on this forum?

It would be nice if it were zero.

I just discovered there is a profile option not to display avatars.  Great!

I saw a message somewhere that suggested 90x90 was the limit and it worked for me yesterday. I thought it was a harmless bit of fun, sorry Jack,I didn't intend to upset you.

Stop rattling his cage!  ::)

(while we are on profiles … that ascii art at the bottom of yours probably looks magnificent on your kit. But ascii art is font dependent and it's "hit a wall" on this tablet a distance off Spain :-\ Is it a train? A rabbit?) :P

I assume 90x90 refers to image size in pixels. What does that equate to in file size i.e. Kb?

It doesn't - or at least not directly, you are trying to compare to things that are not really comparable.  File size is dependent on a whole bunch of factors (compression, file format, DPI etc.) and not just the number of pixels present.

Thanks Helena for that explanation, which is obvious really. I notice now that in Microsoft Picture editor compression facility one can choose size of final image by pixel size, and 90 x 90 is rather small.

I also noticed on iPad that when you crop a photo, the original photo remains "underneath" simply hidden, so easily restored. But of course, Ipad doesn't give one the option of saving a cropped or edited version of a photo alongside the original.

It's exactly the size of the avatar icon as displayed. For that purpose, how can that be "rather small" when it's exactly the right size?

I used http://www.picresize.com/

It's free, easy to use and doesn't seem to distort the image when it reduces it's size. You can specify the dimensions you want the picture to be and it will shrink it to that size for you.
