How would (do) you tackle this tune?
« on: October 23, 2014, 09:26:36 PM »

A while ago i learned the Belfast Hornpipe after it was played at a local session.
Lovely tune, and for me the B and C parts are quite easy, the A part is a bit more annoying to play, what I do right now is the following:
 http://thesession.org/tunes/4 1st setting
On C#/D, all on the D row 1=index,2 middle, 3=ring

33 2323  2321 1123 3
ag faef deAF DFAd f2

The rest of the A part I handle in a similar way.
I recorded how it sounds now, I can sort of get it fluent but it just seems very prone to error, any.. "easier" route I could be taking?

33 2323  2321 1123 3

Everyone has to work out the fingering that suits them... but having said that, if I found myself doing that 111 sequence I'd go back to the drawing board! Sometimes you will do moves like that on the fly, but why not look for something more elegant?

Also I would find the transition from 3 on the e reaching down to A with 2 awkward and hence error-prone.

Not sure yet how I'd do it, I'd probably aim to get down to the D on 1 and play that DFAd group 1212, leaving 3 free for the f# without having to reach twice with it (though there's nothing wrong with doing that when you have to in my mind).

[Edit: I think I would reach for the first A with 1, the first F# with 2, and then as above.]

I think it would sound more fluent if you played the note pairs "swung" rather than dotted, which is how I prefer my hornpipes - again, nothing wrong with playing them in a more dotted fashion, if that's how you hear the tune.   :|glug

@Steve, I was double checking that tripple 1, I guess I'm playing it like this instead.

33 2323  2323 1123 3
ag faef deAF DFAd f2

So your suggestion would be:

33 2323  2312 1212 3
ag faef deAF DFAd f2

At the very least that would mprove a bit of the awkwardness.
Have you tried playing this "swung"? I find that very difficult considering you constantly need to lift your finger to reach a new note.

@sqwzboxstudent I think that's the belfast polka!
@aradru, pretty awesome playing by mr Connolly. It's good to have heroes.
