Poll: Tune of the Month for November 2014
« on: October 25, 2014, 09:39:29 AM »

Is it time for another poll? I think so! This month's options:

- L'Inconnu de Limoise - a lovely mazurka, written by Maxou Heintzen, of French legendary band La Chavannee - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzcuKyDq9xA

- Haste to the wedding; back again for another shot - http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/tune-315-haste-to-wedding-headington.html

- The Old Man & The Old Woman (Le bonhomme & la bonnefemme), excellently played by Serge Carrier here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qv9Cj06ds6g

- Mrs. Hamilton Of Pencaitland - from the playing of Tony Hall, and here suggested and very ably demonstrated by our own arty,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRzf4DtFizI

That'll do nicely I think - happy voting!

Cheers,

Clive

It would be a shame to have another repeated tune for a second month in a row. C'mon people!

Can I shamelessly lobby for The Old man and the Old Woman, which I had just started learning before the poll came out.

It might be a shame for some of us who played L'Inconnu de Limoise last time, but we have had a lot of new members since then who have a right to vote for a tune that might be new to them. I also think it would be an interesting challenge for those of us who have played L'Inconnu before to find a new way of playing it.

Yep, I'm in that bracket and I'm looking forward to learning it so I hope it wins.

Yes, absolutely, have another go at it and you can tell how your playing has developed in 5 years. I have to confess when I compared my Princess Royal this time round with the one I recorded 5 years ago... it doesn't seem to have developed at all! Ah well, back to the drawing board!

Over the last few weeks, I have been going through the index of past tunes which have been played during the life of Tune of the Month. It makes very interesting reading and I have spent many happy hours listening to videos put up on You Tube by people of all abilities, as well as helping me to make up a 'tunes to learn' list. It has also taught me a huge amount. But, it saddens me to see how little enthusiasm there seems to be for Tune of the Month now, compared to the early days.

Especially for the less experienced, it takes many hours to learn a new tune, record it and put it up on You Tube  and melodeon.net, yet often, nowadays, someone will go to all this trouble only for their effort to be totally disregarded by the membership of the forum. This hasn't happened to me yet but I have noticed it on many occasions. This must be soul destroying. When Tune of the Month first started, (I wasn't around then), it seems that the beginners got a lot of helpful criticism and encouragement from the more experienced and there was a big cross section of abilities taking part each month. Why is this happening? Tune of the Month is a wonderful thing to take part in and an important part of the learning process for beginners. It must surely be interesting and beneficial to the more experienced players here, to develop their skills especially as far as working out new arrangements etc..

Would it help, if 4 tunes were nominated, as now, but there was no voting system and each person could choose to play and post any one or more of the four? There could be an easy  tune, an intermediate an advanced and an expert level tune each month.

Just an idea. I would hate to see this great, monthly opportunity disappear and we are so very lucky that our Clive goes to the trouble of organising it each month. Also a big, personal thankyou to those more experienced players who still take part. I won't mention any names for fear of leaving anyone out but you know who you are.

Come on guys....use it or lose it!  :||: :|||:

Arty, I've been playing for a bit over two years now and could probably get over the embarrassment of recording a less than adequate performance ; it's the technical side that baffles me. My granddaughter tells me that now that I've ventured into the world of the IPad  she will show me how to record myself. Perhaps it's the technical side that's the problem ? The recordings that appear all seem to have wondrous titles and effects.....   ???

Well, my few contributions have been extremely low-tech; built-in webcam and Windows Movie Maker, and that's about it. It's lack of time rather than anything else that stops me contributing; there's always something else that I need to get done/learn/rehearse........

For me, and obviously this is only my personal opinion, this would probably not improve my chances of taking part but would probably lessen the benefits to me of doing so - for the simple reason that I'd probably choose the easy tune when I should really be aiming for the intermediate level one.  For me, one of the great benefits of ToTM has been the (sometimes steep) learning curve it has pushed me down.  I also feel it is problematic to categorise tunes in this way - many tunes can be played straight and simple, with a little embellishment or full on twiddly and complex and that for me is the beauty of ToTM, that different players can interpret the tunes as they see fit and in line with their skill levels.

I'm probably among the lower level of skill among the regular contributors and sometimes I don't want to follow some of the previous highly skilled postings, and yes some of my efforts are ignored but that has not been my general experience. I've had many, many encouraging and helpful comments both on melnet and directly on my YouTube postings that as well as being incredibly helpful are extremely uplifting when I am struggling.

I totally agree that it would be lovely to seem more ToTM postings but personally I really like the format as it is.

You make a valid point, Arty. As one of the more experienced players, I haven't posted a Tune-of-the-Month video for quite a while or commented very often on other people's contributions.

I have just smacked my wrist and will endeavour to do better in future.  :|bl

It's actually not that difficult Brian - ask your Grand daughter to show you. It was my son who showed me and I have no fancy equipment, just a 60 quid digital pocket camera and Windows Movie Maker. There is another important thing and that is, recording yourself and listening back is a very important learning tool. Even if you don't post it here on mel.net, it is well worth doing.

Just as an example, I have been going through the posts for Tune of the Month in November 2009, when L' Inconnu d'Limoise was the winning tune:
74 people voted that month
51 people posted videos
18 pages of comments, chit chat and advice were posted through that month.

Compare that to this month, October 2014 (with 2 days to go), Princess Royal, the winning tune:
60 people voted this month
22 videos posted
3 pages of comments, chit chat and advice.

I am in full agreement with everything you say Helena, I too really like the format as it is and I have had a lot of helpful comments too. In fact, one or two people have gone to extraordinary lengths to help me, for which I will always be grateful. I will say, that you Helena, have taught me a lot too. I am aware that we both started playing at approximately the same time and it is always interesting to hear your progress and compare it to mine. More than once, I have listened to you and thought, 'come on David, pull your finger out'! It is all so very helpful on many different levels.

I made this suggestion, purely to try and provoke some discussion on The Tune of the Month and maybe revive some enthusiasm and interest. It is a great thing!

I almost always have a go at the tune even if I can't manage to play it properly or find time to post it. There have been times when I've carried on learning the tune way beyond the end of the month (I'm still learning Old Molly Oxford which may have been the first Totm I attempted). I suspect there may be quite a few “lurkers” doing the same.

There is something about the process of recording and posting the tune that's quite exciting. I know I've been responsible for a few slapdash horror shows in recent months, but I would urge people to throw caution to the wind and just do it – for me there's always something to enjoy in every post.

OK, ok. You convinced me.  >:E I changed my vote from Innconu to Haste to the Wedding. ;)

I'm still a basic (and impatient) learner, not satisfied with my progress. So I didn't take part until now, though TOTM is a great learning tool. I want to contribute next month, Hopefully I'll be fast enough to learn next month's tune ...

That's great news TomBom, just do what you can do - everyone here has been a beginner and we all know how you feel. No one is going to judge but you will find a lot of support. I for one, look forward to hearing your first recording!
