Tune of the Month for November 2014: L'Inconnu de Limoise
« on: November 01, 2014, 12:11:49 AM »

The people have spoken again!

A worthy return for this fantastic mazurka, written by Maxou Heintzen . We played this 5 years ago, as one of the first TOTM's - let's do it again!

My, looking up ABC to give you is easy... just got to look up the old thread (which is here by the way: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,2762.340.html) - and we get this, from Emmanuel Pariselle, courtesy of Lester:

Code: [Select]
X: 187
T:L'Inconnu d'Limoise
M:9/8
K:G
D G2 A|B3 -B2 G c2 A|B3 -B2 B c2 d|c3 -c2 B A2 G|D3 -D2 D G2 A|
B3 -B2 G c2 A|B3 -B2 B c2 d|c3 -c2 B A2 G|A3 -A2||
B c2 d|e3 g2 f e2 f|d3 -d2 c B2 A|G2 F G2 B A2 G|
D6 G2 F|E3 -E2 F G2 A|G3 F3 E3|F3 -F2 G A2 B|A3 -A2||

There are as you'd expect, lots of versions to look at/play along with on the old thread, but here's a couple to get you going... a nice and slow version on a D/G:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzcuKyDq9xA

... and, courtesy of Chris, here's Maxou's band La Chavannee's version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbuaySghw0M

Those who haven't played/recorded it before, well, you jolly well should. Try playing along with an existing video to get the hang of the rhythm if you're struggling with the mazurka rhythm - you'll soon get the hang of it. And those that have... do it again! And lets see if it comes out differently after 5 years...

Enjoy,

Clive

Hi All

Well this is one from me - I think I do not play the A & B parts twice like it should be played - but maybe I'll give myself a challenge to improve this by the end of the month.

Good effort. I like this tune but have too many others on the go at the moment to do it justice. Maybe after M@W!

Hi Oysterboy - many thanks for the feedback - as I have known this tune for quite some while now - I am in the rare position of trying to find another tune to play - normally I struggle with the Tune of the month and am still trying to perfect it when the end of the month happens. This month I may dedicate myself to "Haste to the Wedding" - and if it wins next month I should be well primed to make the post before 2015 !  ;D

Surfing my way through a variety of versions of L'inconnu, I came across this version:

Don't want to hi-jack the TOTM thread ... but there are a bunch of boxes being played that I don't recognize. Anybody know what they are?

Don't suppose anyone has worked out the triplet variations (at least I think that's what's going on) played by various people, including Mr Boeddu and Rita Fancello  (as seen in lester's links in postings to this the first time round)?
Note: I am rapidly losing the will to live trying to work them out myself  :-[

Here's another take on L'Inconnu de Limoise, this time played on a G/C 1920's Hohner, the lower tone sounding rather nice today I think...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLHIJ_QKGKg

I wonder how I played it 5 years ago? Let's see...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw2CTbsVDL0

... yep, definitely prefer the newer one. There's also, for amusement, this, a 5/4 version recorded about the same time as that one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maHbd04sMPo

... which it's probably a good job I didn't listen to before I did this month's effort!

Cheers,

Clive

Been searching for a one row version on YouTube without success. I'm getting the hang of it on my D Organetto but have to wizz off to the dusty/squeaky end to get a note I do'nt seem to possess...no knowledge of music so can't say what note it is.... :|bl

To play it on a 1 row 4 stop  without moving it all up to the top octave I do this

X:292
T:L'Inconnu de Limoise
M:9/8
L:1/8
K:D
A, D2 E|F3 -F2 D G2 E|F3 -F2 F G2 A|G3 -G2 F E2 D|A,3 -A,2 A, D2 E|
F3 -F2 D G2 E|F3 -F2 F G2 A|G3 -G2 F E2 D|E3 -E2||
F G2 A|B3 d2 c B2 c|A3 -A2 G F2 E|D2 C D2 F E2 D|
A6 d2 c|B3 -B2 c d2 e|d3 C3 B,3|C3 -C2 D E2 F|E3 -E2||

The red bits are moved up an octave, this doesn't sound odd on a 4 stop as you are playing in 3 octaves so moving it up an octave still leaves at least some reeds on the correct octave.

Here is a rough and ready recording
