Not always easy to say that a tune played on a melodeon is 'beautiful', but Neil A's version of L'Inconnu de Limoise for TOTM  Nov 09 truly is. He does'nt seem to have appeared on this forum for some time.... Shame

Here's L'Inconnu de Limoise in C on a Bertrand Gaillard.http://youtu.be/dfAnx_R1Ykw

I can't remember ever having played this before but I'm sure I've heard it in sessions.
There are a couple of little fluffs at the same point in the tune.  It's remarkable that having got it wrong once the same thing happens again!

Surfing my way through a variety of versions of L'inconnu, I came across this version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZpRd-OtqR0&index=4&list=UUV9xPVzEandgk_3_RJwnW_A

Don't want to hi-jack the TOTM thread ... but there are a bunch of boxes being played that I don't recognize. Anybody know what they are?

I think that they are made by Yves Gaubert, the player nearest to the camera at the start of of the video. His website is here:

He lives down near Carcassonne.  :||:

I'm enjoying all of these versions. It really is a great classic tune for the melodeon - relatively simple, but elegant.

Here is a version I came across played by Carlo Boeddu on a somewhat wetter than usual Castagnari's.

What a nice sound! Not long ago I preferred a very dry sound. But this has completely changed over the past months. And I don't know why. ???

this has two guitars, one fingerstyle, one strummed, mandolin melody, mandolin chords, bass guitar and a couple of fiddles (which I aways bury in the mix as I'm not yet that confident), and a tambourine, the melodeon is always the hardest part to learn!

In a workshop at Witney on Sunday, Emmanuel Pariselle played L'Inconnu "the flat way you Engleeesh play it (poouff!) and the correct French way". The difference was stunning. Some people recorded that clip. If anybody who recorded it reads this, I would be very grateful for a copy.

(Note to myself: buy a decent recording device. Any recommendations would be most welcome.)

Ditto! Would some kind person put their recording of Emmanuel's 'correct French way' up here, so we can all benefit?

oh crikey, I suppose I'd better prepare myself for some "dislikes" on my Youtube like the last time I put up a rubbish version of a french tune. FWIW mine is not the english version, it's the australian one - I was very taken with Hectorawol's version when I first learnt this.

I would love to hear this as well! Currently trying to learn this tune so can post to ToTM. Bob, can you describe what the difference was at all?

I'd like to hear it too, but recently at the Stowmarket melodeon making course he was saying the same about another mazurka (I forget the name) and in that case the English version was too fast and played in straight quavers instead of dotted (like "dotted hornpipe") quavers.

There is also the issue of what speed to play a mazurka. I have seen/heard recordings of French musicians playing this and other mazurkas at very different speeds - Stephane Delicq very slow in a late night Bal, for example, and one of the YT videos referenced earlier in the thread, at a cracking pace in comparison. Difference dance styles, I guess. Perhaps my learned friend Dr Ryall can explain?
