Just uploading my recording on the slow internet connection at my parents' house, will have it up shortly. He did give us permission to record it but I don't want to go sharing it around online a lot without his permission, so I'll give the download link an expiry date of a few days for anyone interested to grab a copy of it.

I wasn't very taken with this tune initially, but how he says to play it is actually not that far from what I was doing, so I think with a bit of practice I might get a half-decent recording up. I'm finding the fingering much easier in the upper octave too.

Edit: Here's the recording, will expire in 7 days: https://www.dropbox.com/s/39ytthxm1wtjgmp/limoise.wav?dl=0

Thanks for that - very interesting stuff. In a nutshell, Emmanuel's showing the difference between this in waltz time (binary, as he puts it, each beat split into 2, so you could count each bar as 12 34 56, if you count quickly) and mazurka time (tertiary, each beat split into 3, so if you count quickly (slipjig speed) each bar becomes 123 456 789), which gives the mazurka skip to the rhythm.

He then goes off onto a chordal exploration of the tune second time round of course, but that's another issue....

Thanks very much for posting that recording. While I play L'Inconnu in a way that is fairly close to Emmanuel's 'ternaire' mazurka style, I was discouraged to discover that I am playing a couple of other mazurkas in a smoother 'binaire' manner. Note to myself: further work needed on Une Onzième and Mazurka du Lanternaire.

I'd like to hear it too, but recently at the Stowmarket melodeon making course he was saying the same about another mazurka (I forget the name) and in that case the English version was too fast and played in straight quavers instead of dotted (like "dotted hornpipe") quavers.

Quite probably this one as he 'discussed' the playing with me by informing me if I played I like this

English Version

in his village they would 'nail me to the barn door' and he taught me to play it like this

French Version

I get the same recording whether I click on the English version or the French version.  ???

By the way, I know the tune as Mazurka d'Auvergne, which, of course, merely means that it is a mazurka from the Auvergne, one of many, no doubt. Perhaps we should call the Anglicised version Lumpy Custard and the French one Mazurka d'Auvergne.

Oops! fixed now.

ps the tune Lumpy Custard is quite probably a Polish mazurka called Dziekowice Mazurka

So basically, 'waltz' rhythm means straight quavers and 'mazurka' rhythm means dotted (or swung) quavers... is that right?

(I love that descending bass line that Emmanuel does at the start...)

According to thesession.org, Mazurka d'Auvergne/Lumpy Custard seems to have several other names, including Dziekowice (Lord knows how you pronounce that!), Mazurka Auvergnate, Mazurka de Barbary and Skelton's Mazurka. Confusing!  :-\

It's far from perfect and I reckon I could work on the arrangement some more, but here's my attempt:

Also apologies for the rubbish recording quality!

Always refer to the dance to answer questions like that.
I don't know how to dance a mazurka, but mazurkas tend to have a strong middle beat in the bar, whereas in a waltz the first beat (of the three) is the main one.

And there's more to it than that as the dance is a sequence of steps several bars long, so the tune may tend to have a 2-bar or 4-bar pattern gently imprinted on it.
Oh - I see Wikipedia says dotted on the first beat of one bar and not on the next, and also that either the 2nd or 3rd beat is emphasized.

Well, that gives you some idea.
See Wikipedia on Waltzes too. Scroll down a bit for examples of waltz rhythms.

Being new to the forum (see "Delurking at last" in General Discussion), and relatively new to playing melodeons (seriously, anyway), I thought I'd take a deep breath and pitch in here. It's a lovely mazurka; here's my first pass at it.

Our International dance teacher, Evra Jordan (RIP, bless her) insisted that although the emphasis on the second beat - mazurka this is - was common, it did depend on where the dance came from. She was strong on links with Polish Dance groups
