Jack's Waltz, collected from Sally Sloane, a source of many great tunes and songs.
https://soundcloud.com/klappo/jacks-waltz
One of my favorites, and fun to play....
Enjoy!

A favour (I hope!) in return, on the Australian theme...

Mike

Nice versions of some Sally Sloane tunes from both Mike & Malcolm. You could dance a varso to Mike's playing, no worries :)

Is it about time for Australian tunes to be the theme of the month?

Here's Quigley's Reel.  I've had this for a long time, originally from the The Ralph Page Book of Contras in the late 60s/early 70s.
I believe Ralph collected it from Al Quigley.

I'm a bit embarrassed to post this, as it is full of mistakes and fluffs but I was determined to try this lovely Strathspey. At the limit of my experience, I found it really quite tricky to play - Oh! and please excuse the cry of relief for having reached the end!!!  :|bl Hahaha!

Finally got a fair recording of Sylvia's Serenade today, albeit a few fluffs in the B section (not especially nice fingering on a 2-row). Bit fast too but at least it's mostly consistently fast ;D

Very nice - I like that. Well played too (what fluffs? Enhancements!) Where is it from?

Thanks! It's a Playford tune. I actually learnt it from the Leveret recording of it before learning it was a Playford tune (and that it originally had an extra bar, which I'm now playing)!

Here's the ABC I wrote out for it:

Quote
X:118
T:Sylvia's Serenade
M:3/2
Q:1/2=100
K:Dmaj
E2 BA G2 B2 G2 E2|B2 ed c2 f2 ^d2 B2|g4 f4 e4|f2 ag fg fe ^d2 B2|
E2 BA G2 B2 G2 E2|B2 ed c2 f2 ^d2 B2|g4 f4 e4|f2 ag fg fe e4:|
K:Gmaj
|:B2 dc B2 d2 B2 G2|Bd gd Bd gd {B}cG|A2 cB A2 c2 A2 F2|FA cA FA cA FD|
G2 BA G2 B2 G2 F2|g2 fg ag fe ^d2 B2|b3 a g2 f2 .e4|cB AG FG FE E4:|

I play the A part on the D row and the B part on the G row, if that helps anyone who decides to learn it (:)
It's also much easier if you have a half row, that D#/Eb is a bit of a pain; I have quite large hands and it's still a bit of a stretch.

Having just listened to your recording of Sylvia's Serenade, my first thought is 'what a gorgeous tune'. But you make it sound so aggressive, like a storm has just broken. If I were to learn this and I may, because it is so nice, I would want to make it flow and dance like a butterfly. It's a serenade, so surely it should be calm and romantic. Imagine you're standing beneath your lover's window playing this beautiful tune to try and win her love.

I hope you don't mind robotmay, I'm trying to be constructive.

Hehe, thanks for the feedback arty! The Leveret recording is much more like you describe. Unfortunately I was getting rather aggressive the more times I failed to record it properly; in the end I did what I often do, which is play it faster and harder so that I've got less time to cock it up in! >:E

Phew!! Thanks for taking my comment as I meant it to be. I have a habit of saying what I think and wishing I had kept my mouth shut after!

I have just found the recording you talk about, (I think), on You Tube. Is this it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoF1UJniIrc
It is delicate and free. Quite lovely I think.

Sometimes we are all guilty, I know I am, of trying to 'get another tune under our belt', when really we need to give the tune a lot more time to mature and develop. You have all the notes down now and you certainly have the skills, what you need to do now, is learn the tune so well that you don't have to think about the playing of it and just 'feel it'. It seems to me to be that kind of tune and worth spending the time with. It's gorgeous. I would be trying it without any heavy basses too, to see if I could make it interesting in another way.
Is that Andy Cutting popping his head in to the left side of the video?
Cheers robotmay - keep going!

Aye that is indeed Andy Cutting on the left. I'll be going to see Leveret in a couple of weeks, which should be a good gig!
I find it much easier to play tunes more relaxedly when I'm playing them with other people, as then you don't worry so much about getting everything perfect and instead just enjoy the process. Also I believe Leveret are playing in a different key (the minor keys of C/F I think), which gives it a slightly more melancholy tone than the D/G box. But aye I do need to play it more relaxedly in future. However I'll need to get more people to learn this tune first! >:E

.....Sweetness of Mary....
The Session says it's composed by Joan Macdonald Boes from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

A favourite of mine from watching the marvellous Martin Ellison version which I've watched so many times I've worn the pixels out . Arty, yours has a different B music to Martin's I think?

While we're on the subject, here's one I did earlier... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgY7x75hRic

I should do a proper new one for this month though.

With only a few days of the month left perhaps someone might like to tackle a tune I transcribed earlier this week from a book printed 274 years ago. Here it is in the original A minor and the D/G friendly key of B minor but the accidentals might be a bit of a pig. You may be the first person to play this in public for over two hundred years so give it a whirl!

Something missing there.  You've got some bars of 3/8, and if you erase a barline to fix it you end up with a 7-bar second part.

I'd guess it went something like this, interpolating a third bar into the second part:
