Hi Jack,

Thanks for pointing out my obvious errors in adding a bar line half way through a 6/8 bar making two 3/8 bars and then missing out a whole 6/8 bar - doh!

Could I ask you to please PM me if you want to point out errors in my transcriptions in future (such messages will be gratefully received believe me!!), or if you prefer to rewrite the abc errors you find with your own assumed corrections and formatting then you should please rewrite the header removing all references to the vmp and myself as transcriber.

This is only fair Jack, the moment you alter anything it is no longer my transcription and the vmp are certainly not involved.

Cheers,

Pete

I didn't spot that you were the transcriber - thought you were quoting something out of the VMP archives from way back.  Anyway, you still need to be credited, however I've munged it.  You did most of the work.

Was the dropped bar Playford's fault?  If not, how good was my guess?

Here's another one from this thread that had some mistakes (again, I can't guess who made them).  The original has some wrong note lengths, and where I have a fermata at the end (usual for a minuet in this style), the version quoted here had a staccato mark.  Maybe somebody misread a squiggle.  I've also changed the key signatures to something a bit more plausible and changed the last note of bar 13 from an F to an E.

I am not convinced that the solitary gracenote is what it purports to be.  Another bit of notational Chinese whispers?

That was my transcription of what Leveret were playing, which I then added the missing bar to (think it was a recent loss, I found a Playford one which has it). Thanks for sorting out the key signature and the pacing. The gracenote is there because it was being consistently played in their recording, but yeah I don't think it would have been in the original!

Here's a scan of an original I've managed to find (in F) with some Googling:

Even though that supports the change of that F# to E, I'm not going to change how I play it to that, as it doesn't sound as good (it lacks some suspense and the nice transition into the high G)! :D

I've just signed on to the forum after a nice long lurk. I was thinking of any number of Irish tunes that fit the criterion (those being my daily fare), but then this tune from Québec occurred to me. On any given day it might be my favorite waltz. I love to play it on concertina; here's my first attempt on melodeon.

The error was entirely mine Jack, it was the last tune I did in a long session and my concentration was obviously flagging! It was a Walsh book I was working from btw, not Playford - B:Walsh, The Compleat Country Dancing Master Fourth Edition. 1740. I think your guess was pretty good, you can check it against my corrected post.

Absolutely wonderful, I take it you are virtually playing your own accompaniment?

Tidal Wave are in my top 10 favourite list  (:)

Nice rendition of this beautiful waltz. One of my favorite to play on 1row D melodeon.

Thanks for the kind comments on my attempt at "Valse Bernadette." I actually have a bunch of recordings of the tune, but it's probably true that I was mainly hearing Sabin Jacques and Raz de Marée in my head when I recorded it yesterday.

Yes, that's me in the background as well. Concertina and guitar are old, familiar territory compared to this melodeon business!

I've almost always seen it as Three Handed Reel and that's the name used in Hardcore English, but there is an ABC file on the Session website that calls it Four Hand Reel which is pretty confusing!

I've always known it as 4 !

That's the problem with picking things up at sessions, probably someone mixing the name up with the Dorset Four Hand Reel, fortunately Beatrice Hill's Three Handed Reel is so well documented that it should be easy to say one way or the other.

Hang on though, the abcnotation.org website has a transcription of Beatrice Hill's Four Hand Reel by Bryan Creer, a musician I know well and one who's tune knowledge I have the greatest respect for. This is definitely the same tune so I'll make enquiries and be back!!

The tune book 'Hardcore English' (EFDSS, 2007) researched and compiled by the late, highly respected Barry Callaghan gives this tune as Beatrice Hill's Three-handed Reel recorded by Russell Wortley in 1954 from the eponymous melodeon player in the Forest of Dean.
