Many of us play to enjoy the tunes and then some want to go and join in at sessions, the audience would regard those who play as musicians of varying degrees of skill. With determination i have progressed beyond fumbling while playing most tunes in my memory cells and then I felt like admitting i was a musician.Have never been formerly taught and the same applies to my photography which is now my income. I cannot seperate the challenge, frustration and finally the sheer enjoyment when I finally figure out how to play a tune and remember it.

With the OP,

When should you call yourself etc..
When you know which way up to hold the instrument.
A better question might be : "do you enjoy playing or have you set a chore?"
There is a difference between a musician and a player of music. I'm proud to be in the latter category.
