D/G & Fred Astair and Gene Kelly
« on: November 20, 2014, 09:32:08 AM »

I have a very nicely quiet and un-clacky G/C and sometime in the future might like to acquire a D/G.

My Serafini G/C is very quiet, but so many D/Gs that I've heard sound like Astair is tapping on the melody side and Kelly is taking care of the bass end.

Question: Is there a D/G that is generally agreed to be quiet/the most clack free, and doesn't  sound like Astair/Kelley, or my dad's false teeth tapping out the National Anthem?

Thanks

Ah, you've been listening to a lot of Hohners! My Saltarelle has an extremely quiet action, as, I imagine, do other Saltarelles, along with Castagnaris, Dino Baffettis etc. It's not the key that makes it noisy, it's the construction methods employed, so actually there's a lot of choice. The thing with Hohners is yes, they're noisy - but they sound so magnificent! (Other opinions may vary!!)

Among others, Saltarelle Pastourelle II D/G; Hohner 4-stop 1-rows in C & G; assorted Hohners; 3-voice German (?) G/C of uncertain parentage; lovely little Hlavacek 1-row Heligonka; B♭/E♭ Koch. Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........

There is a range of things that can be done to Hohners to reduce the noise.  Thicker pallet facings, bushed bass buttons, and on some models blocks of hard felt under keyboard surface and between buttons.  Plastic fingerboards on modern Hohner two row boxes make more noise than older fingerboards which were made of wood.

I find this question a bit strange...

Why should the tuning have anything to do with how noisy the action is?

You could even get a D/G made by Serafini and it would be exactly as noise free as your other box!

it's kind of weird...but i'm reading this as your dad's dentures also being in D/G tuning? i'm not asking how he produces the bass accompaniment.   (:)

D for dentures
G for gums.

Now I'm thinking of the Cockney alphabet that John Foreman used to do.

C for exPLODES!

N for a penny, N for a pound
Is "clackety-clack" a really bad sound?
Do Fred and Gene really care
If their rhythmic rattlin' fills the air?

but going back to the point...I quite like the clack of a hohner...if you really can't stand it any of the fettlers on here will work their magic and you won't believe you're playing a Hohner...

Hohner- the surest way of ensuring that the percussion doesn't get ahead of the melody.
