Poll: Tune of the Month for December 2014
« on: November 23, 2014, 11:47:42 PM »

Off we go again folks; this month's nominations:

- Haste to the Wedding; last month's runner up, here demonstrated ably by Lester, http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/tune-315-haste-to-wedding-headington.html

- Dr Fauster's Tumblers - cracking session tune, played by ... erm... Lester: http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/tune-356-dr-fausters-tumblers.html

- Polka Chinoise - Trad quebecois (I think) tune, here played by Lester again.... http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/tune-92-polka-chinoise.html

- The Quaker - I think we've covered most morris tunes by now, but not this rather splendid one that plays in D and G: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ1wGc-INKA&list=UUW1vaS9H_t0f8dBpFEIztKg ... demonstrated by... Ed Rennie! Sorry Lester, no clean sweep this time :-)

That lot will do us nicely I think; happy voting!

Cheers,

Clive

I go for Polka Chinoise. It's a great challenge regarding the rythm and the structure of the tune. Nice rendition by Lester,  very accurate. Thank you!
I confirm that it's a quebecois tune. Here's a link to the first recording of this tune by Mr Alfred Montmarquette (+/- 1930) http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/obj/m2/f7/13239.mp3

Re Polka Chinoise - I've been working round to relearning it on a 1 row which is how the likes of andy Cutting and Dan Quinn play it and, I kind of guess, how it was originally play in Quebec. But the B does seem to fit really well on the D row when its played in G.

Having heard Lesters offering plus his link to Andy Cutting I've changed my vote to Polka Chinoise ( from Haste to the Wedding ). What a great unusual tune....

There must be some candidates that Lester hasn't recorded.

But now I think of it........

I do appreciate Lester's posts, but whenever I click on these "blogspot" links, the page takes FOREVER to load, if it ever does, and I end up cutting and pasting the title + "lester" to get to the actual youtube page to see the video.  (  I have IE 9, anybody know what the problem is here?)

I note that; as usual, the tune I voted for is last (so far) It must be my modal upbringing.(Whatever that means)

I get the feeling I'll be adding  Polka Chinoise to my to-learn list very soon and what a great tune it is.  I haven't even begun to learn this month's offering yet, what with with the tunes from the English Mutton weekend in October, Witney just a couple of weeks ago, a bunch of (Cotswold) morris tunes to learn, stuff for the Brian Peters Lewes workshop next week and of course the Christmas repertoire to work on.

I think I need to start prioritising, this is a serious case of too many tunes, too little time.

I'm not going to take part in Tune of the Month this time. I am finding that I am spending all my practice time learning, (two new tunes this month), the monthly challenge and I don't have time to practice all the tunes I have learnt before. So, through December, I will be brushing up all the tunes that are going rusty. Enjoy yourselves, it's a nice selection this month!

Likewise.  Reluctantly I am also going to have to foresake TOTM for the time being unless my "to learn" list and TOTM happen to overlap. November and December don't.  There are only so many hours in the day  :( N
