Cardiff Folk Session
« on: November 27, 2014, 12:46:55 PM »

Well after a very enjoyable evening in the company of Bellowhead in a pub in Cardiff (which is now one Saltarelle bass button richer thanks to squeezy, as I don't think he ever found it), I've decided to finally get off my arse and actually organise a city centre (ish) mixed session. I've been talking about doing it for the past 6 months but I think I've finally met enough local musicians to be able to get a reasonable turnout.

No dates or venues planned yet, but if you're in the area (I know there's not that many on here, but maybe a few Bristolians fancy popping over and learning some snazzy Welsh tunes) then I'll be discussing the initial event on the Cardiff Folk Session Facebook page and updating it with the info of when it's actually going to happen.

I hope it turns out to be a success!

You totally have to learn some proper session tunes now  ;)

Good luck with this, good to see more and more sessions out there (although this one is just a little too far away for me).

Doh, it would have been nice to meet you Francois! It was absolutely rammed in the Urban Tap House; hardly room to swing a melodeon around :||:

It's going well! I'll be getting back in touch with the pub manager who's super keen to have us at his new pub opening in February soon; hopefully they'll be ready for next month. PM me the dates you're down and I'll see if I can sort something out whether that pub's open or not ;D

For anyone interested there's a Scottish session on the 25th (for Burns' Night) in Dempseys, opposite Cardiff Castle. I'll be there with my wide range of 10 Scottish tunes I know ::)

The first session is scheduled for next Monday (the 16th)! I have a number of venues lined up now but Dempsey's is happy to have us at short notice and it's a decent pub for a session.

After the success of the first session (bar the pub not wanting us back, the gits), this is now a fortnightly event, with the next one coming up on Monday. This time it's over in Penarth, so if you're around in South Wales and fancy a mixed session come and join us: https://www.facebook.com/events/391498384347772

Was it the regulars who clapped that didn't want the session back? I thought it went well and had a good mix. Keep it up.

Yep, no idea who didn't like it as there wasn't anyone in the pub; it was probably one of the staff. But sod 'em, I've got a bunch of other venues lined up instead!

Nice to know that business is so good on a Monday evening that they can afford to turn away custom...

I think it was eleven, but can't be sure. A good number anyway. It will be once or twice for me there when I visit Cardiff! Well done Rob for getting it moving.

 :o

Yeah I've come across quite a few interesting management techniques from pubs/bars whilst trying to set this up, like wanting £50 for a room on a night when nobody's in the pub etc.

Thanks Mike! It was good to see you again :D

On a side note, it turns out the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards are in Cardiff this year, and I totally missed that announcement (and therefore don't have a ticket, boo). Is anyone coming over for it? It looks to be on a Wednesday, but I could try and organise a session on the day (or week) of it if anyone's about and fancies one, though I don't know the timings of the actual event yet. I'll consult the others at this Monday's session!
