A hornpipe from Sally Sloane
« on: December 11, 2014, 12:29:33 AM »

Going through a 1950's field recording of Sally Sloane I found a nice set tune in hornpipe rhythm called 'Coming Down The Mountain' that she played in D on her fiddle. She played it as a 16 bar tune, but when I tried playing it in A on a D one-row it took on a life of its own and ended up as 32 bars. The tune sounds familiar and I suppose its her version of an older tune - does anyone recognise it?

I don't recognise it as a version of something older, but it is a great tune and nicely played!  (:)

Strictly speaking, in your ABC you need a K:A field at the start of your transposed section in order to give you the correct key signature of 3 sharps for A major. This will include a G# of course, which you don't have on your one-row in D but you fudge your way around that in your playing beautifully!  ;)

Good tune and nicely played indeed. My instant reaction was to imagine dancing a schottische or barndance to it.
Cheers

The first part, transposed to G, sits well on a DG ... played along the row it's simple to change row for the second part ... 48 bar if played on an ADG, all same fingering (:)

I agree xgx. When I played it in G first-off the tune fitted nicely on the D/G box, with plenty of options for accompanying chords. So I've just had another go in G major and tried to stay closer to how I hear Sally playing it (on the 'Share The Harvest' CD from the National Library of Australia). Sorry about the noisy bare feet stomping on floorboards...

Thanks for all the compliments. I have a cunning plan to infiltrate more Australian dance tunes into the melodeon.net group consciousness.

I discovered this tune was published in 1775 as 'The Island of Love'  http://tunearch.org/wiki/Island_of_Love
and in 1782 as 'Cupid’s Recruiting Serjeant' http://tunearch.org/wiki/Cupid%E2%80%99s_Recruiting_Serjeant
The Village Music Project also has it in Wm.Mittell's MS,New Romney,Kent,1799.

Reminds me of the 'Trip to Cottingham/Sally Sloane's Jig' entry in Hardcore English (p.74), where that little-known tune reappeared on the other side of the world.

I'm finding the tunespotting caper is becoming a bit addictive ...

Bring it on! I don't think you'll meet with much opposition  (:)

Smiley, you might be interested in the thread here on Paddy Godden's Lancers too - Steve has helpfully put in into ABC.
