In praise of common sense
« on: December 17, 2014, 10:29:04 PM »

Just a quick post to congratulate a large number of forum members who managed to sensibly discuss a difficult issue intelligently, acknowledge the potential pitfalls of the subject and add their thoughts without controversy or rancour.

Along with others, I was quick to petition closure of the thread discussing the makeup choices of some morris sides because it had led to deep division and unpleasant responses in similar discussions across the Internet. Theo wasn't disposed to banning the subject outright on the evidence of past history and was inclined to let the thread run because it was relevant to many melodeon players and because he trusted the forum members to debate the subject sensibly without degenerating into childish misuse.

In the end the thread explored the subject thoroughly, sensibly and with a broad streak of caution. In the end Theo thought the subject had run its course and closed it before the Limericks crept in, very wise in my opinion.  ;)

So well done one and all, we are a (world wide) community of like minded souls who listen to the opinions of others and draw sensible conclusions based on informed evidence (as we see it, thus leaving back door wide open!  ::) )

Well said Pete.

Baz, you may have missed (or perhaps, more sensibly, ignored) an All Blacked Up publicity drive.

Well done to everyone for an enjoyable and informative thread.
I knows nowt about the Morris, me.

!!!Thread drift alert!!!

The reference to Mrs Trellis caught my attention. In my former life as a secondary school teacher, students used to refer to me, when they thought I was out of earshot, as Miss Trellis!

On the whole, I preferred my other nickname of 'Miami Bob' - a reference to the TV programme, Miami Vice.  8)

Does anybody else have an interesting nickname, perhaps one related to their melodeon-playing?

Yes Miami Bob, all my neighbours, who have to listen to me practicing every day, call me Pugwash. Can't think why!

No, but one of my favourite pieces of music is "Spam in Aluminium" by Thomas Trellis. Any relation?  >:E

I think most of my nicknames would be unrepeatable here......
*definitely * related, or certainly due to, my melodeon playing  ::)

Heartily agree Pete. Almost everybody who agreed or disagreed, backed up their argument with their reasons.
