Reed blocks
« on: December 20, 2014, 09:31:07 AM »

Hi everyone

I look through eBay from time to time to see if there is anything intresting, I came across a fantini sharino and was looking through the pictures the seller provided. And there are 6 reed blocks in it... And I know the sharino is 4 voice because I nearly bought one from fantini, and it also says in the description.

My point being, I always thought the number of voices is the number of reed blocks that's in it? Or am I wrong?

Don't know about a Sharino in particular, but if a three row instrument has three rows of pallets, then two double sided reed blocks per row of pallets equals four voices and six reed blocks.

2 voices per block, 2 blocks per row.
3 rows X 2 blocks= 6 blocks

Ah I see, so the number of blocks depends on how many rows of pallets, hence my 3 row box has 2 rows of pallets and 4 blocks for the 4 voices?

Haha  :||: I know you can get one row with loads of voices... But for a 3 row more than 5? Is it possible?

I had a Borsini BCC# for a while which also had 6 reed blocks for 4 voices. Two reed blocks - 4 sides - held the L, M-, M and M+ reeds for the B row, another two reed blocks held all the reeds for the C row, and another two held all the reeds for the C# row. A disadvantage of this 6 reed block arrangement, seen in both the Borsini and the Fantini Sharino, is greater bulk/depth front to rear of the instrument.

A more efficient reed layout uses four reed blocks for three-row, four voice instruments: one reed block for all the L reeds for all three rows e.g B, C, C#, one reed block for all the M- reeds, one for all the M reeds and one for all the M+ reeds. This arrangement is found on later model Hohner Shand Morinos, Paolo Soprani 3-rows and probably other Italian 3-rows.

Bulky thing.
