Poll: Tune of the Month for January 2015
« on: December 26, 2014, 12:15:58 AM »

Hi everyone; hope you've had a great Christmas! This month's nominations:

- Haste to the Wedding, narrow runner up last time, but here it goes again, one more try for glory! A session standard 32 bar jig, often played on one row (and well suited to it) here demonstrated ably by Lester, http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/tune-315-haste-to-wedding-headington.html ; direct youtube link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fUlAn9XkFI

- Mrs Savage's Whim, must confess not sure how this will fit on melodeon, but we can but try eh? Played by Boldwood, rather beautifully here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrn377kyz44

- Enrico, another session standard, and 'Thomas Hardy's favourite tune' says Lester! Lester's demo is here: http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/tune-282-enrico.html and the direct youtube is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5USt1PI_ZU . Another tune well suited to one row.

- En Avant Blonde - traditional (I think!) French waltz; nice little tune that sits nicely in Em on a D/G. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aesoSRvoKXw

There you go folks; happy voting - have a great new year.

Mrs Savage's Whim just so happens to be in one of my new tunebooks I got this week (John of the Green: The Cheshire Way) so that has my vote as triple time hornpipes are super awesome and I'm determined to learn many of them. I expect it won't win but it'll give me something else to learn anyway!

The last minute or so was a bit interesting, but overall, after a couple of listenings, I thought most of it a bit muddled and repetitious. The performers seemed seemed quite into it though. Different strokes............

Fair comment - it's nice, but I haven't rushed off to try and learn it yet like I have with some of the leveret stuff. Still, it's the tune that we need to judge rather than the interpretation...

Once again, I have unerringly picked the tune with the least votes. This is why I don't bet on horses, and never win the lottery,

Hope y'all had a great Christmas.

Haste to the Wedding is a reasonably tiring Fieldtown dance, that keeps going and has unusually 4 backsteps then next time 4 beetlecrushers backwards then next time 4 upright capers backwards getting out of a round....in fact it's all heys and rounds. We dance it for weddings.
Just in case anyone was wondering.....   ::)

I like the rendition of haste to  the wedding played on youtube by Serge Carrier  on 4 stop one row accompanied by piano.  Nice foot tapping  rhythm

Q

Not the way Fairport Convention play it as the first number in the Royal Seleccion No 13 Medley on "Bonny Bunch of Roses"! But then, I tend to play it as a standard sort of English 6/8 two-step (jig versus 2-step controversy alert!); we always used it as the tune to "Farmer's Jig" when it was the first dance at a wedding ceilidh.

Have to agree. Really nice playing.

Yes - nice bounce, just the way I like it; and excellent bellows control - a superb object lesson.
