Phew..... Incredible sound from his box, especially at the beginning sequence.
Any ideas as to the keys of the melodeon?

C#/D , I believe is the system He plays.
I'm Impressed with his playing and bellows control (keeps them tight with very little movement)

Looks to be a Bergflodt, very nice sounding boxes.

What a fabulous piece of music and what an amazing musician.
I love the treble sound of the accordion but I don't like the sound of the bass at all - it sounds very, well....boxy, (excuse the pun), to me. I think I would soon get fed up with that. It will be very interesting to compare instrument sounds, when we eventually hear Ukebert's Bergflodt.

Yes it's a Bergflodt, looks to be a 2 row possibly 4 voice as I can see switches on the grill like ukebert's. Can't make my mind up about the basses, I think it's more than an 8 bass, possibly a 12 ?

Arty - yes, it has a strong bass, not sure how a C#/D system pitches the bass. The natural acoustics of the place will play some part, as it's wood / hard surfaces.
As you say, it'd be interesting to get Ukebert's instrument playing alongside for comparison.

And it took me a little while to spot the second air button. Fascinating set-up.

Second air button? Could it be a button on the bass end to take out low reeds in the chords?

Superb technique. And not scared of putting in hefty chunks of silence for dramatic effect. (first video).

I wish I could play like that :(

I have been meaning to record a taster with my BF, at some point I probably will. Rest assured that it will be featured mightily on the album!

… meanwhile, back in Holland, Munnelly has recorded "Falling" http://youtu.be/NtjXva97ta8

He's come some way from Celtic roots? This video was linked in today from van der Aa's FB. So not unsurprizingly it features Munnelly's "other" melodeon ;)

Interesting that he plays the treble side with his thumb behind the keyboard. This technique keeps your knuckles parallel with the keyboard rather than "crabbed" over. Must suit his style of playing or maybe it's just how he learned and that's what he's stuck with.
Lovely tones on that Bergflodt.

There is always this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hll1K6dBkpA&feature=youtu.be

It looks like Dave was only taking delivery of his new box when Olav (Diatonix) recorded that YouTube clip, and hence (presumably) a few "bum" basses that he plays - and hence my YouTube comment on it...

He was playing great stuff on a single row melodeon with his thumb behind the keyboard when I saw him years ago in Westport Co Mayo. I love the energy and individuality he puts into his music!

The reason for the 'boxy' sound on the bass is that he has the higher reeds on the bass end switched out, so only the lower reeds sound. Typical coupling arrangement on PA boxes, not so common on melodeons (if thats the correct term).
