Tommy bass reeds
« on: April 21, 2009, 12:53:11 PM »

Could somebody please clear up my confusion about the bass reeds on a Tommy? According to the 2007 review on this forum
http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,93.msg410.html#msg410
they have only 2 bass reeds, and are a bit weak.

According to the Castagnari website (I tried to put a link in but it didn't work!) they have 3 bass reeds.

Have they changed, or is it something I'm not understanding?

I seem to recall they have now been upgraded to 3 voice bass (remember this is the fundemantal buttons only - the chords are only three reeds each, something I missed until recently)

My Tommy (old one) has just two reeds for the bass an octave apart. Never considered it under powered, mind you I have taped off the lower of the two reeds so mine is even quieter.

As a point of interest the higher of the two fundamental reeds is shared with the chord so for the G bass you have 4 reeds:

Bass     G & g
Chord        g & b & d
             ^
            same
            reed

Just curious, Lester. Why did you do that?

I have also taped off the thirds so have a very sparse bass end all together. As to why, it seems I am the only player who does not like honking basses on a melodeon, I play a lot of droney bass lines and I found the original set up too loud against the treble end. My preference would be to have stops to enable the reeds to be switched in or out but not available onthe Tommy, but I am just getting a Connamara 3 so all will be well.

Fair enough. We can't persuade you to get one of those Steirische accordeons with Helikon basses then  ;)

Sounds good. Look forward to hearing you play it at MAW next. The C3 will be a bit heavier than the Tommy though.....

I loved the tone of your (our old one) but the the clickerty clack of the buttons sent me demented.
As you know I have sold it on.

Yes!

1. I should never have sold it
2. I should have bought it back when you said you were selling it at Whitney
3. You live and learn (hopefully)

It would seem I buy melodeons something like two years to early measured against my skill level. So I sold my first Connamara because I didn't need the 12 basses and didn't use the 1/2 row and didn't like the 4th button start. Now I need a F bass and a G bass on the pull, I know what the half row is for and 4th button statrts are a thing of genius. So I am buying Steve Fox's box off him via Theo for some tweaking.

If I had all the money I have spent on melodeons I would still spend it on melodeons but a bit slower!

Amazing how things go round in circles.  I am selling the Connemara for exactly the same reasons as Lester sold his first one...and I'm selling it to Lester!  So if anyone has one to sell in two years time, let me know.

Don't you find that buying a melodeon which stretches you forces you to grow into it, thereby increasing your skill level....or at least your ability to make use of the extra features?

I have just taken delivery of the Tommy which Steve Fox has sold me....and it's a cracker! Thanks, Steve.

I've had a look inside the bass end and there are 3 fundamental and 3 chord reeds...no shared reeds. No worries now about a weak bass.

Curiously, despite what it says on the Castagnari website and elsewhere, it weighs not 2.8kg but 3.5kg!

Just thought I would chip in since I now have Lester's first Connamarra... very nice box too! The E/D reversal on the 1/2 row should be standard with the Bm chord! I can't say I've noticed clacky buttons the way I play. On topic: I've never found the bass of my Tommy to be weak, but I don't play it out much as it is too dry to really cut through, but thats a different issue.
