Bandoneons on YouTube
« on: December 11, 2007, 01:14:22 PM »

Just discovered the wealth of bandoneon music on YouTube.

http://uk.youtube.com/results?search_query=bandoneon&search=Search

I had no idea that they only played in one direction!! mmm, perhaps they do play in both directions?

There seems to be a tendency to play on the outward stoke, and just air button in, except in extreme circumstances.

Anyone know?

all played "lefty" with mostly an extra air button, except the Concertinas which I play the conventional way round.

I'm certain they play in both directions (after all they are first cousins to Anglo concertinas) but IIRC they are played (a bit like cajun boxes or blues harmonicas) mainly on the pull (or suck!).

Sounds very much like CBA played music.

They do play in both directions. I don't recall the button layout, but perhaps the pull notes are just easier to play. On melodeon I tend to do the same when improvising. I'm playing a CF with a reversed 5th inner row button, so it's easy to play the entire scale pulling. From time to time I play a push note with lots of air to close the bellows again. It seems like other players also prefer pull notes for improvisations.

This chap uses hi sbellows in both directions, but seems to prefer the draw for the extended runs.
