Poll: Tune of the Month for March 2015
« on: February 22, 2015, 12:18:48 PM »

Hi folks,

What tune shall we play this month?

Blewbell Hornpipe - traditional English 3/2 hornpipe, runner up, and here played by new superband Leveret (it's playable on a one row apparently) - http://youtu.be/Itgt_AacsCA?t=4m21s ; and here's a nice new close up courtesy of Anahata, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAPD1xbyLMM (with lots of sharps/flats in it and certainly won't play on a one-row), or this one from Roger Thomas (which will): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF0o4_iu7KM

William Irwin's No. 2 - if you think Blewbell is the best tune ever, you haven't heard this one :-) With apologies for the appalling recording (don't know what happened there), here's yours truly playing 5 years ago for a band practice. Chords thoughtfully provided, but you don't have to use them! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR28MV3ldfs (the first one). The second one, William Irwin's No. 3 (confusingly) is a cracker too, but we'll leave that to a different time. I learned this from the playing of the Cock and Bull band, in case you were wondering.

Arkansas Traveller - Lester's latest blog posting, and what a good choice! http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/tune-405-arkansas-traveller.html and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmHjqILNiLc . Composed in the 19th century by Colonel Sanford C. 'Sandy' Faulkner (1806–1874)

New Land - Lester, what would I do without you? You certainly pick some great tunes! http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/tune-403-new-land.html and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXuVOZgJpfw . Composed by Otis Tomas of Baddeck, Cape Breton Island

Happy voting, enjoy!

Clive

There's a bit of confusion up here near William Irwin's stomping ground as to what 'No.2' is as there doesn't seem to be a tune called that in the manuscripts.  Does anyone have a source reference for the tune or know what it's title was given as?
Hopefully it's somewhere in here but I'm not sure how to track it down:

Sorry - no idea, but if you do track it down please let me know. One of the ABC search engines should find it; it's almost certainly not known as no. 2!

Cheers,
Clive

Had a quick look through the ABC; that octave jump at the start should be quite distinctive, but I can't see it. Anyone had better luck?

Saw Leveret on Friday. Stunning skills, and seem really nice guys. I'd love to be able to have a go at Blewbell, but even a simplified version i.e. botched, (which is how I play).......... would be hard for me. Would love to see others try it though, so I've voted for it. Do think the fiddle adds so much to this though.

I've actually written out the version of New Land as played by Five Men in a Boat (featuring Emmanuel) if anyone's interested in that. It's a very fun tune to play; nice and bouncy.

Here ye go! They transposed it to D (from the original F) and this is a pretty accurate transcription of what the fiddle player is playing. The whistle player doesn't have the low notes and so plays them an octave up, which is what I'm doing on my 3rd button start box. I also haven't written out the chords I'm using, but hopefully this is helpful:

Quote
X:189
T:The New Land
C:Otis Tomas
S:Transposed from Five Men in a Boat recording
K:Dmaj
M:3/4
A F>E|:D2 D>A, D>E|F2 A2 A>B|(A2 A)>F E>F|{E}(D2 D)>E F>A|G2 G>F E>F|
G2 B2 B>d|(B2 B)>G E>F|(G2 G)>A (3GFE|F2 F>E D>E|F2 A2 d>e|(f2 f)>e d>c|
(B2 B)>c d>e|f2 f>e d>f|e2 c2 c>d|B2 B2 (3cBA |[1 (B2 B)>A F>E:|][2 (B2 B)>c d>e|]
|:f2 f>e f>g|f2 e2 d2|G2 G>F G>A|G2 A2 B2|e2 e>d e>f|
e2 d2 c2|F2 F>E F>G|F2 G2 A2|d2 d>c d>e|d2 c2 B2|E2 E>D E>F|
(3EFE D2 B,2|A F3 F>G|E C3 C>D|B,4 (3CB,A,|[1 B,2 B>c d>e:|][2 B,2 B>A F>E|]

Sorry for any oddities in how it's written out, I only wrote it out for my own use originally :D

On two row box it works best on the inside row. Emmanuel plays an AD box on that recording. If you play it on the D row of an 8 bass  DG then you miss the F# chord which is quite a big loss IMHO.

Aye agreed. I've been planning to try and record the melody on my D/G box and the harmony on the A/D box as it might make for a nice combination, but we'll see how that goes ;D

OK - The Willian Irwin Tune is "The Lancashire Hornpipe" in the VMP file at http://www.village-music-project.org.uk/abc/IRWIN.ABC
It's the second tune of that name in the file, title "Lancashire Hp. WI.099"

Instant dots here: http://www.folktunefinder.com/tune/121185/
(I love that site!)
It's going straight on to my to-learn list, whether or not it wins the vote here.

Ah thank you Anahata - you're a star  :D

... But isn't that the second tune of the set? (No. 3!). Do we have a lead on the first tune yet (No.2)?

Cheers,

Clive

Sorry clive, you're right, it is the second tune of the set, and I misread your post as meaning the second tune of the set is the one we wanted. OK, I'll try again...

I've gone though the whole of that Village Music Project Irwin file, and can't find it.
After folktune finder failed, I paged though the dots rendered from the ABC file, and couldn't recognise anything remotely resembling what you played. Where did you get it from?

Its from the playing of the Cock and Bull Band. I remember listening to the tune on a tape of theirs (whats a tape dad) years ago and not being able to find it then. I suggest someone asks Jean-Pierre Rasle or Pete Lockwood about it. I also didn't understand at the time why they called William Irwins Lancashire Hornpipe his No 3 when it had a perfectly good name to start with.

Yes, I found out it came from C&B.

Here's a transcription from Clive's video. It can't possibly be definitive because Clive doesn't play it exactly the same each time through. Maybe Chris Partington will arrive to enlighten us with the story from the VMP's point of view.

[[ redacted by Anahata, as further down the thread Clive has posted an edited version he considers more 'vanilla' ]]

Oops!  :D

It's originally from their 'Eyes Closed and Rocking' LP, which predates Pete Lockwood's time with the band; this is the Rasle/Whetstone/Martin/Maxwell band. 3 tunes; the first ("William Irwin No.1") is played slowly by Jean Pierre Rasle on pipes (and doesn't really float my boat; they use it as a lead in tune for the next two)... and then, oh my, off they go into 2 and 3. Fantastic stuff. Jean Pierre lives in France these days; Dave Whetstone gave up box playing (mostly) and lives off in Oxfordshire. Paul Martin (aka Silk) still lives in Stony Stratford, and I see him from time to time. If I bump into him, I'll ask him, but don't hold your breath - the original recording is 30 years old, so it's not unreasonable if he doesn't remember...

Cheers,

Clive

Doh! I'm in a right quandary (sp?!) now. Despite raising the question about the dots for the Wm Irwin one, I was actually hoping that Blew Bell would win after listening to Anahata's fab recording of it. Being an irrationally avid supporter of English tunes I would normally be more than happy to vote for an Irwin tune but now it turns out it probably isn't one. (Probably turn out to be French! >:E) I'm also busting a gut to try and play the fiendish Blew Bell and loving it.
