Tune of the Month for March 2015: The New Land
« on: March 01, 2015, 11:20:41 AM »

A clear winner this month; Otis Tomas' tune 'The New Land' which has come to us courtesy of Lester to him from Emmanuel Pariselle. Here is Lester demo'ing it,

http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/tune-403-new-land.html and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXuVOZgJpfw .

and courtesy of Lester's page, here's some ABC:

Thanks very much to Otis for composing this tune and very kindly letting us use it; if you want to see what Otis does in his day job, go to www.fiddletree.com to look at the amazing work on his violins and guitars - Otis also has tune books and CDs available if you want to hear more of his tunes.

Cheers,

I was about to say exactly the same, here's mine http://youtu.be/FuCL5f1MUqE

I've not come across this tune before and I was intreagued by the differences in videos and abc posted during the voting and at the beginning of this thread. I also looked up the tune and found other slight variation both in ornamentation and harmonisation. So I took some ideas from each of these and added my own.  I must admit it took more than 1 take.

Here's my effort:

I've meant to learn this tune ever since I first heard it, c. 1982, on the LP of the same name by the American/Irish group Touchstone.

I appreciate the nudge. I struggle with procrastination sometimes.

What a lovely relaxing sound.

Thanks, Tuechter. That's both gratifying and mysterious, since by the time  I recorded this I'd done so many takes trying to get it even halfway right that my internal soundtrack was less a lovely waltz than some sort of Death Metal.

That is lovely. The stringed instruments add nicely to the sound. I didn't notice your bass playing.
May I ask how you record the multi-track recordings? Do you play melody first?

Thanks, TomBom. It's funny about the bass; through my good headphones it's a bit overpowering, but it does get lost on, say, the iPad speaker.

I've been putting up a lot of stuff the past week, partly to get used to a streamlined recording protocol. It works like this (deep breath here): I record the melody track directly to iMovie, using an Apogee MiC (very convenient, since it draws power from the tablet). I then save the video to my Photo Roll and export it to Dropbox. Supposedly iMovie can export directly to Dropbox, but this doesn't always work for me; it usually requires two steps.

I then import the video to a new project in the Auria recording app (which is just wonderful), where I can overdub as many tracks as I like and add some modest enhancements (just panning and a bit of reverb, mainly). When I'm happy with the mix, I send it to the mastering app Final Touch, via yet another app called AudioShare.  In Final Touch I can add a little EQ to the entire mix and raise the levels.

Then I send the completed soundtrack back to iMovie, where I delete the original audio, add a title, and tweak the video a little (very little). Save the movie once more to the Photo Roll, and upload to YouTube.

It probably sounds terribly complicated, but in practice it's quick and smooth. And it's far less involved than my old method, which involved transferring the video wirelessly to my PC and using Audacity and the kludgy old Microsoft Movie Maker. The new approach lets me do everything on the tablet; the entire recording studio fits in a backpack, and I can make a video of decent quality anywhere.

Like for example organizing all those books that serve as your backdrop??

In all seriousness Bob, I really enjoy your videos and playing.  Really soothes the soul!

For some folks that is organized and if it was organized like a library then you might need a big file to find it.
I think Jackson Pollock would agree.

Like others have said Bob nice job with the tune!!

Sorry, I tried again with decent speakers and suddenly the bass is very audible.  :D

Bob, thanks very much for taking your time to explain everything step by step! Your description was much more detailed than I expected. I am getting an idea how to manage overdubbing on a video.
Your very mobile recording studio is hard to beat.

The cure for the bass problem is to give it some boost around 200-300Hz and cut from 100Hz and below (approximately: experiment obviously). It won't sound so deep and boomy but it will be more compatible with both small and large speakers.

Sorry, drifting off topic.

The cure for the bass problem

At the risk of prolonging the drift (mea culpa, anyway), thanks for that tip. Now that you mention it, I think I've done something similar for recordings in the past, but I've gotten a bit lazy on some of the YouTube videos.

And now...back to the Land.

A couple of 'fat finger' moments, but generally where it ended up.

All the best

Interesting that so far all the versions in G miss out the big fat B chord in bar 12. I fell a recording session coming on!
