Bourree
« on: April 29, 2009, 12:27:52 PM »

Does anyone know (and have dots or ABC for) any good bourrees?  A friend knows the steps for a bourree and I need some melodeon music to play for it.

An excellent source is the two volumes of the "Massif Central Tune Book"  by Mel Stevens  otherwise known as the pink and blue books.

You should also listen to some bourees being played because there is a particular rhythmic thing that makes a bouree sound like a bouree

The Massif Central Tune Books are out of print as far as I know. I got mine from Mel Stevens direct. I put a link to his web site in a previous post here, but it doesn't work now.

Merci mes bonjons.

I've discovered that a quite a few tunes are call Bourree without necessarily conforming to the patterns and timing of the dance. I think I shall need more info on the dance before choosing a tune.

Hiya,

My favourite 3x bourree is the 'Bourree Tournante des Grandes Poteries'. A search through the links in the previous replys should bring up the abc/notation.

There's a good selection of videos on youtube showing the dance and the tune. Put 'Grandes Poteries' into the search. I'd do a link but that's outside my IT ability at the moment.

Regards,

Tim

'Grandes Poteries'
Nice tune,  but played more like an English jig than a three time bouree!

agreed - but I think you can get the idea from the clip.  I found it interesting watching an actual dance - much more helpful in fact

What defines a Bourree? While watching a You-tube video of a Box player playing The Parson's Farewell my hubby promptly claimed to have played it years back from a German dance book from 1600 and something. He said it was only titled Bourree, he couldn't prove it though as he can't find the dots!
I also came across a book from Corina Oosterveen titled "Bourree, Bourree, Bourree" sadley only in German. I have another book of hers "Zwiefache" a Bavarian volks dance that continually changes its tempo between 3/4 and 2/2. It's  multilingual with the text in German, English and French - well reccommended.

in Britain you also will require a bucket of water for the bodrhanist sat next to you - beating out jig and reel rhythms respectively.

Should be mandatory anyway!

Stanley knife is a more permanent solution - applied to the bodhran, not the player!

Actually the rythm is pushed or pulled in most Trad French couple dances to suit the dance in progress. Mazurkas lilt, Marches push, Branles swing, and if you aren't playing Canal in October with a skip then you'd might fare better playing it in August at Lorient (ie as an Andro). Their polka is similar to ours but quite fast. Ditto the Waltz.

A problem IMHO with much British (includes this side of Ireland) session music is that it's rather lost contact with its roots - the dance. Playing boeufs

This is precisely what happened to me recently. except it was an An Dro rather than a bourree that I was playing. It ended up somewhere between a bouncy schottische and a polka. Sadly I didn't have a bucket of water, and I wasn't going to waste my beer.
