Tune of the Month for April 2015: Off to California
« on: April 01, 2015, 01:39:23 AM »

Nice choice folks.

Off to California - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQeCYTJr7vc courtesy of Gavin Atkin's excellent tutorial videos. A nice simple standard session tune, a hornpipe, that would sit nicely in anyone's session repertoire. Plays nicely on one or two rows, perfect.

Cheers,

Clive

Here's a version from Yankeeland (though nowhere near California):

In view of the tune's historically evocative title, and as an alternative to my usual melodeon-face selfie, I thought I might get in touch with my inner Ken Burns.

Well done Bob, very enjoyable listening. How did you do the multitracking so quickly?

How did you do the multitracking so quickly?

Thanks to boxcall and smiley for the kind remarks.

I've been playing at multitracking for a long time (twelve years, more or less), and have finally got it down to a pretty streamlined method. The video, along with the principal instrument and/or vocal track, is recorded with iMovie, saved, then opened in the Auria recording app. All the overdubbing is done there, and the mixdown is then sent back to iMovie (via a couple of other apps). The beauty of it is that everything (including, in this case, ferreting out all the old pictures online and incorporating them in the video) can be done on the iPad (or other tablet, I'm sure, mutatis mutandis; Apple's doing just fine without my unpaid endorsement).

Add a tune you've been playing for forty years, and the entire process takes no time at all. Assuming, of course, that you don't muff recording the melodeon track about a hundred times; but that's another story.

I have known the tune for some time but haven't played it for ages.
Sorry for the sound quality - just plugged the cam in and didn't balance the volume.

Wow, a lovely submissions so far!

Here's my contribution:

https://youtu.be/IuFW65xY7Kg

I knew the tune already (I am a mandolin and guitar player), so figured it might be a good choice for my first TOTM.

I've been playing for 2 and a bit months, and was inspired by Mel Biggs and her Fort-Tune project, so I recorded where I am at with this tune after two days, and will make another recording at the end of the month, when it will (hopefully) be less mistake ridden and have some left hand going along with it.

Just playing with ideas, (which is probably the idea of the thread).

Very timely Melvin Bragg programme on Radio 4 this morning discussing history of Califorina Gold Rush. Famous for 49ers, but actually started in 1848. Just in time for the new tangled Melodeon.

Just playing with ideas

And excellent ideas they are, all three. I like anything played on a one-row (especially played this well), but the waltz version is a revelation.

Sweet Flowers of Milltown, an Irish version of this tune.  From the Fiddler's Companion:

Quote
TOM MORRISON’S REEL. Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard. AABB’. The tune was recorded as a schottische on a 78 RPM in 1927 by Tom Morrison as “Sweet Flowers of Milltown,” and is a variant of the “Off to California” family of tunes. Morrison (1889-1958), the ‘Dunmore Flash’, was a flute player from near Glenamaddy, in the Dunmore area of County Galway. Morrison sometimes partnered with renowned fiddler Michael Coleman for duet recordings. Songer (Portland Collection), 1997; pg. 196. Green Linnett GLCD Kevin Burke - “Portland.”

SWEET FLOWERS OF MILLTOWN. AKA – “Tom Morrison’s Reel.” Irish, Schottische. D Major. Standard tuning. AA’B. Recorded in New York in 1927 by White Park, near Glanmaddy, Co. Galway, flute player Tom Morrison (born c. 1888) for Columbia Records. Morrison, writes Reg Hall (1995), was the son of a blacksmith and emigrated to the United States in 1909, where he became an associate of fiddler Michael Coleman and accordion player Peter Conlon. The melody is a variant of the “Off/Going to California [1]” family of tunes. It was recorded by Kevin Burke as a reel on “Portland” (appears as “Tom Morrison’s”). Topic TSCD602, (Ed. by Reg Hall) Tom Morrison – “Irish Dance Music” (1995. A reissue of the 1927 original). Conal O’Grada – “The Top of Coom.”

I was more than a bit surprised to not want to barf at my playing there, I must be finally getting the hang of this thing, at least enough to have a bit of fun, anyway.  My favorite so far is Alan's, that's great stuff!

Excellent stuff so far folks! Here's my more-or-less-vanilla version of Off to California, or at least the version of it I learned many, many years ago when I was first setting out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzG6X9rwd0Y

Played on the Streb electronic box in G/C (which I'm using to simulate a bunch of changes to the bass end of a box with Theo at the moment - the new user-programmable version of the Streb is fantastic at trying keyboard layout ideas out).

Cheers,

Clive

Here's a bit of a departure from my normal straightforward recording.
Saltarelle Pastourelle III with 2 reeds then joined by the same instrument with one reeds and bass with the low bass out, then joined by a Hohner Erica and a concertina gets a small part too.

https://youtu.be/1OeQRFYlYPk

(I know I appear to be playing the left hand at the beginning and the sound says otherwise - I made a mistake with the camera for that bit)
