Blackman's Hornpipes
« on: April 10, 2015, 11:25:33 PM »

A core repertoire of thirty two excellent hornpipes published in the early 19th century and recently transcribed to ABC by me have now been error checked and released into the wild.

Blackman's Hornpipes.

Thank you for sharing your efforts. I am looking forward to reading through them all. I went to your link and enjoyed playing a few using a melodeon keyboard rather than a computer keyboard.

Hi Pete,
Thank you for notating and then sharing. I've just downloaded them into Explorer.
Any background info on them or Mr. Blackman?
cheers

Chris P's description of the abc file is as follows:

"A Selection of the most favorite Hornpipes for the Violin. NB. Most of these Hornpipes are within the Compass of the Flute. Price 1s; London. Published by W. Blackman, Music Seller. 15 Union Strt. Southwark, ca1810-22. A small published book from early nineteenth century London, containing thirty two still popular common time hornpipes."

There's a scan of the book somewhere out there on the net in PDF format, I'll try and find a link . . .

What a trove, Peter, and what a lot of careful work. Thanks so much for making these tunes accessible, especially to those of us who have to transpose for G/C instruments.

I get a buzz out of it Jeff and the process is quite therapeutic, you need to concentrate to get it right and that concentration takes your mind off the cares and woes of the day and allows you to unwind while you work. Blackman's was easy compared to a lot of the transcriptions I do, a short book with only thirty two tunes that are nicely printed and well scanned to PDF enabling me to copy four to six tunes an hour with a couple of short breaks in between.

If you have dots to any tunes you like, do please feel free to ask for a transcription to a key of your choice as I enjoy your playing and we'll be doing each other a favour!

Pete.

Pete, after having discovered the 'transpose' tab in abcExplorer from previous chats, I'm well away!
I did try your favourite abc package ( name escapes me ) but it didn't seem to load, so have dug into Explorer a bit more to good effect.
It's a nice little package of tunes, and I'm glad people such as your good self have the time and inclination to do us all a favour.
cheers

I took your ABC files and converted them to pdf files, and combined them into a single pdf document, with one hornpipe per page. I printed mine double sided. I didn't learn about the scan of the original until after I had created this version. I tried to attach it here, but the file is too large. If anyone wants this PM me with your email address and I will email it to you.

Explorer is my weapon of choice Q and the specified software for use by Village Music Project transcribers so I can't imagine what it was that failed to load for you. I also use Easy ABC as it has a few slick tricks including transposing which I never use Explorer for!!

Ah.... Sorry Pete, I have mislead you.
In a previous discussion you mentioned a couple of good points that Easy abc has.
I thought I'd take a look, tried to load it but for a strange reason it loaded but then got a bit sticky and somehow disappeared! I have no idea what happened. Did it a couple of times. I quite like Explorer so just gave up on Easy.
Someone mentioned how to transpose in Explorer and I've successfully done that, including a couple of Blackman's tunes so I'm sticking with Explorer.

I might take another look at Easy when I have a moment as I seem to remember you can make an aide memoir, where it gives the first few bars of each tune, which saves that ' how on earth does that tune start?' Moment that we all have!
Cheers

At the moment ABC Explorer is broken for me, it doesn't display the music (abcm2ps problem I think) and cannot export PDFs (Ghostscript problem) I think these are registry issues so I need to get the machine in for a tech to look at. The PDF problem is common to all of the abc software I have but at least the other programs display the dots!

The things I like about Easy ABC are:

The 'edit' window shows the whole abc file not just the current tune so it's easy to scroll through making changes to multiple tunes without going into an edit mode and accepting changes to move onto the next tune.

The transpose feature works every time and I've encountered a lot of errors trying to transpose with Explorer. Before finding Easy ABC I used online converter's like O'Regan's to transpose tunes as they work well too.

Reordering a file to alphabetical order by tune name and renumbering the X: fields is quick and easy.

Generating a cheat sheet showing the first 2-4 bars (incipits) is very straightforward.
