Hmmm...when I lived in the Highlands of Scotland, I was told by a pipe-sergeant in the local pipe band that "skirling" is actually a fault in technique. I have no idea whether this is right or not....

Don't bagpipes 'burl'?

The Scots word, 'birl' means, to spin.
Melodeons, are asthmusical.

Of course, in Canada the term "birl" denotes log driving, which refers to the practice of walking on logs floating down a river, and which survives as the sport of log-rolling. Hence the song "The Log Driver's Waltz":

For he goes birling down a-down the white water
That's where the log driver learns to step lightly
It's birling down, a-down white water
A log driver's waltz pleases girls completely.

''noise'' is generally a pejorative term.
when i play, i don't hear noise, it's more like sylarks and linnets.
(tinnitus)  ;)

not sure if its the melodeon itself or the way its played  but some sound like  the proverbial fart in a colander - going round and round and not knowing which hole to come out of!

'Birl' or 'Burl' ?  Two different words, both having different meanings.
I always think of the sound a melodeon makes as 'angry'.   >:E
"A temper of melodeons".
