Tune of the Month for May 2015: Harlequin Air
« on: May 01, 2015, 12:48:55 AM »

Here's this month's (narrow) winner, Harlequin Air. A nice little tune that does come up in sessions fairly frequently and well worth learning.

You'll find Gavin's video where he plays it at slow learning speed and full speed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd9MYjQUAMM

Thanks Gavin - those videos really are a godsend.

Happy recording folks,

Clive

Great tune. I thought I'd try it on a one row

I came across this when looking at Gavin's this morning. Even by your own high standards, Anahata, that is pretty spectacular - lovely playing from both of you, thanks

I couldn't agree more, Peter. The precision and musicality of their playing is a continuing marvel for me. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing M & A at the Millrace Festival later this year...and I'll just bet that you will be there too!

Well, if either of you (or anyone else) comes to Mill Race, please come and introduce yourselves. It would be great to meet you!

I loved Pikey's one-row version, and of course Anahata and Mary's rendition sets the bar impossibly high.

Here's my wee effort:

http://youtu.be/He2z_aZ45og

I also recorded an Anglo concertina version (http://youtu.be/i78pX3y7yE4) in April for the Tune of the Month at www.concertina.net. As I indulged myself a bit in multitracking that time, I decided to play it solo here by way of penance.

As a further penance I play it on my Maugein, a.k.a. the Backwards-Basses Box. For reasons unknown to me, the inner and outer basses on this instrument (which I bought new) are inverted: pull-G is where pull-A should be, and so on. Yes, I know I could swap the reed blocks easily enough, but I kind of enjoy the mystery of it, as well as the mental exercise.

Here is a short version to demonstrate the "Octoput", a Hohner Liliput retuned to D/G, L/M by Mike Rowbotham.

Ditto, lovely sound - has microbot fitted new L reedplates after shuffling the originals down ? if so are they the same small plates or has jiggery-pokery and filing been in action ??

(there is another sound file of the Octoput at https://soundcloud.com/microbot-2 )

The lower reed-plates are longer, with the word "Germany" across the bottom, and "Hohner" up one side. They are the same width as the other (Liliput) reeds-plates, and their extra length has required Mike to extend the chambers in the reed blocks.
I can't tell if the longer reeds were always their current width, or if they have been filed - I guess this shows what good work he does!

A very basic version, I am starting to hear some of the nice bits from other people's posts in my head while I am playing, in time they may reach my fingers! (First tune of the set).

Nice work.  Great feel. I'm not sure I will be able to put mine up at that pace!
Hope to see you at an event some time this year. Going to Warwick Folk.
