Theme of the Month for May 2015: Tunes of Jimmy Shand
« on: May 01, 2015, 12:52:11 AM »

OK, Lunan Bay didn't get voted in, so let's do a Jimmy Shand theme instead shall we? Any tune written by, played by, or associated with great Scottish accordionist Jimmy Shand (or his son Jimmy Shand Jnr). You'll find lots of example tunes you can try on youtube; you don't necessarily have to play them in the scottish style of course - play them as you want to, but just play them.

More information on Jimmy here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Shand

Enjoy,

Clive

Mostly on hohners , with a couple of Dinos and a smattering of anglos - and now a Jeffries duet

Actually by Frank Stanley, apparently, though Jimmy Shand was the one to make it famous.

He did indeed, taking it to number 10 in the UK singles chart in 1955

Hi All,
just recorded this for the Theme of the Month

Haven't recorded anything for ages, so have bitten the bullet!
Feels a bit nervous and maybe hurried, but I seem to have that ability when recording. Hey ho......

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Until I find the time to think of something new, here's the Bluebell Polka I did earlier when theme of the month was tunes from Scotland.

Finding tunes actually written by Jimmy Shand isn't so easy, but I have a couple of ideas to try...

Here's my contribution https://youtu.be/9W-AM9owKAI
It's a live performance at the ceilidh so try not to mind caller and dancers you can even notice me between them sometimes ;) I took this set of waltzes from early Sir Jimmy's recordings but have done it with key changes. The box here is 12 basses B/C. Hope you'll enjoy it

very nice!. the third tune is Lunan Bay.  It also goes to show how much better a BC sounds with 12 bass.

Nice playing, and calling at the same time, and not in your native language, very impressive.

Nice to see the small girl in the middle!

Thanks Theo but that's not me who's calling. I'm trying to learn to do that but progress is quite slow. Meanwhile I learned to sing with my own accompaniment so I'm closer now!

Thanks George! It took a while to get used to limitations of the bass line and I'm not sure I can manage with eight basses only. Sometimes I lack a couple of notes even with twelve but I cannot get more at the moment!

they are all quite simple tunes so why not just try playing along with them in the traditional way. Melody only and then when that's sorted have a dabble at  adding what bass you can depending on the set up of the box you are using
