My journey to the tune is long.
I met a certain anglo player, Andy Turner, through the morris when we were both learning concertinas. We also kept bumping into Roger Watson from the NVB at Balfour sessions at Sidmouth around 1908-ish, but I'd never heard of the band and again only vaguely knew him through morris.
Andy hatched a plan 'let's learn this.....' so we did, and both let fly when we met Roger  at the next session.
I think ' you little b*ggers.....' said with a huge grin was the reaction, so beer was bought all round!
Since trying to re-learn it on melodeon after ~ 20 odd years, I've talked to Andy, who somewhere has come up with an alternative title of 'Looking for the soap'!
I'll stick with the one I know.......

and of course thanks to Anahata, who has given some more info about it and a good version to boot.

ah..... :-[
a lovely typo, thanks for pointing it out  Baz.
On reflection though, we have known each other for a very long time!
About the time when Andy and I learnt this tune, I remember bumping into you lot at the end of the strand at Sidmouth and having a lovely session in the fresh air. Paul Havill was a prominent lead player and I remember a lovely compliment paid to me from him which as a relatively new concertina player meant a lot to me.
Happy days......

And Paul didn't give out compliments readily.  (:)

It's one of those little memories that brings a smile.
Anyway - back to Mr. Shand!

Here we go folks, Kerry Wills' famous ragtime tune, Whistling Rufus. An outing for the Hohner Lucia (converted from CBA to DG+ by Mike Rowbotham) - it's been a while coming (about a year), but I think I'm finally getting my head around the stradella unit now to the point that I'm playing music on it, rather than fighting my way round tunes! Worth the effort though; it's great fun now, and I'm still only using haven't scratched what it can really do with the accidental row and the full chromatic stradella bass!

Crazy tune, crazy box, (crazy player)

Cheers,

Clive

(PS: As played by/learned off Jimmy Shand on quite a few of his albums)

I'm quite taken with the Household Brigade tune that Anahata played at the beginning of the thread.
One for me to start on when I've cleared the decks a bit and sorted out the current tunes being learnt. It's quite complex for me so it'll be one for the backburner.

The abc's I've got are here glaned from t'internet.

I think the A and B music is the same, but am I right in thinking Anahata plays the C music is an octave higher?
Certainly looking at the video it starts  on an E in the higher octave and don't want to get caught up in learning a tune wrong!
Anyone out there more adept at working it out?
yours in hope!

Yes, I moved some of the C music up an octave because, like most D/G melodeons, mine doesn't have a low F natural.

I've glad you found that on t'internet and didn't laboriously transcribe by ear, because I have an ABC file that I could have posted. (which, on looking now, is the same as the one you've posted above!)

Just felt I wanted to share.....
I've tweaked my abc version of The Household Brigade to be nearer to Anahata's by altering the abc's and making it sound right.
It's my first time of ever tweaking abc files.
OK.... I do need to go back and check it's right, but am amazed I've done it!
To celebrate I've gone and tweaked some other tune abc's I've learnt when the abc's were not quite right accoring to my ear, perhaps a note or two out somewhere.
Also added chords 'as I play it' to two tunes. Maybe not exactly right on timing of inserting the chords ....but hey, it's good enough. I usually pencil in the chords on the sheet music as I try and learn it, so if I loose the paper it's gone....
I know there are some very accomplished notation people out there, but this is my first attempt at anything to do with them.
I feel real sense of achievement!

Apologies for thread drift, but just feel really pleased with myself!

Well I don't know about you, but I learned quite a bit about Jimmy Shand's music this month! Well done folks, and onto the next theme - any late additions as ever always welcome, just stick them on the end here!
