Tune of the Month for June 2015: Vedder Michel
« on: June 01, 2015, 01:10:04 AM »

A clear winner this time, from northern Germany comes this ridiculously catchy little number - https://youtu.be/abCbTASVcCo (first tune in set).

ABC here, courtesy of Lester,

Code: [Select]
X:1
T:Vedder Michel
M:2/4
L:1/8
K:D
D/E/|FD DE/F/|GE EA/G/|FD DC/D/|E/D/ C/B,/ A,D/E/|
FD DE/F/|GE EA/G/|FD EC|D2 z||
F/G/|AF Ad|BG GG/A/|BG Be|cA AA/G/|
FD DE/F/|GE EA/G/|FD EC|D2 z||

and words (should you feel the inclination!), dots and another ABC setting here: http://www.folktunefinder.com/tune/194615/

Not tried this one myself yet, but it is catchy, and looks like it should play nicely on one row. Good luck folks!

Cheers,

Clive

Seems to also be known as Feder Mikel, and David Dolby tells me that Silkeborg Morris used this as a second tune for Young Collins Bledington when dancing at THaxted this weekend so may be some unpublished video of that around.

Short as meets the need, 8ve A part on the one row.

Best wishes from Suffolk

It's also ToTM on concertina.net

It couldn't be more convenient: not only is the tune named for me; I get to record it vedder I'm playing melodeon or concertina.

Here it is on a one-row in C:

http://youtu.be/oSa16T2YQCo

I've had this box (a Gabbanelli "Cajun King") for ages; it was the first melodeon/b.a. I owned. The model doesn't appear to get a lot of respect from Cajun musicians, but whenever I get it out (which I should do more often) I'm impressed with what a nice little instrument it is. Granted, I've only once or twice laid my hands on a box by a top Cajun maker. There's something to be said for blissful ignorance, and for not developing tastes one can't afford.

I have been trying to play this on my one row Hohner and have to ask if you have the same accidentals as here I have tried the lower octave and the upper octave and it doesn't quite fit.

Stephen:
(1) he's not playing the accidental in the B music
(2) in the A music he's cheating by playing the missing low A an octave higher. I thought I'd invented that trick but I'm not the only one!

Stephen--

Anahata's explanation covers it.

Playing Irish tunes on the flute for thirty-five years has given me a very cavalier attitude toward jumping octaves whenever necessary. And my more recent infatuation with the one-row is corrupting me in a similar way with regard to fudged accidentals. It's a small sacrifice to make for the Sound.

As it happens, Vedder Michel is also TOTM at www.concertina.net. So I got to record the melody properly on an Anglo at http://youtu.be/WNkHFLi4hRg.

Vedder Michel in 3 different keys on one D/G melodeon.

That is beautifully done and fiendishly tricky. Can't get my fingers anywhere near round it in C and I can't work out why I don't notice the absence of an F chord when you play it? Must be magic.

No magic. F natural on pull mean I can play a RH F chord. It's a bit lacking in bass  ;)

Here we go, the B part sounds as if it ought to go somewhere other than back to the A part

I confess I got that! The magic is making it look and sound so straightforward (:)

My attempt for June 2015. "Vedder Michel" is well known especially in North Germany. It's a nice and easy dance. "Vedder Michel" is this type of man that is dangerous for all young ladies. The lyrics of this dance describe all the tricks Michel knows to be a real Casanova. In my version the girl hits him on the floor in the last verse. (For this my smile in the end :D ) But there exist a lot of variations. In England you find this tune as Turks' March No.1("Hardcore English").

And here my concertina version:
