Theme of the Month for June 2015: Slow Tunes and Airs
« on: June 01, 2015, 01:27:05 AM »

We (kind of) did this a few years back, but let's do it again! Slow tunes, which are listening pieces rather than being particularly meant for dancing. They can be airs, or they can simply be marches/waltzes played at a slower, more gentle pace than if you were playing them normally for a dance.

See if you can break my cold, cold heart with a wonderfully evocative piece of playing!

Cheers,

Clive

There is a nice  video of Sir Jimmy Shand playing 'Oh gin I were a Barons heir'  on a 2 row hohner Erica which is quite eassy to play along with.  jimmy shand melodeon solo - you tube will bring it up

A dismal, overcast morning here summoned forth this tune.

http://youtu.be/v2fvdUFX7ro

Several recordings are listed at thesession.org, but the only one I can remember having heard is on the LP "Lochaber No More" by The Boys of the Lough, from which I learned the tune nearly forty years ago. For much of that time I mainly played it on flute or whistle, and eventually on concertina. But I find I also like it on the C#/D box (as played here).

I've always loved this tune and wondered why it doesn't have wider currency (at least among musicians I know). I play it in slow waltz time.

Hi!
Here's the one I did a wee bit earlier with my fiddler pal http://youtu.be/B-XI7LNu6RE

It's a full month ahead so I hope to post something recently done too  :||:

Thanks, Bob. This is a very simple tune, perfectly suited for the Weltmeister cajun box. I just use the LM reeds.

Might be leaning too heavily on the rubato, I do tend to chew up the scenery.

Hello all, it's been a long time . . .

Slow tunes are definitely my favourite thing.
Here's a few pre-recorded ones (please excuse this - I'm not playing at the moment for various reasons except having been tempted out for a ceilidh this weekend - I'm just letting people know that I haven't shuffled off this mortal coil so please excuse self-indulgence).

There's probably more that I'd consider slow tunes but I'll stop there  :-\

OK, while we're playing our "prior art" cards, here's a few that were, of course, ToTM in their time (so you've seen them before) :

The Abbess by Andy Cutting
A Grey Day by our own LadyDeTemps
Feed The Birds by Robert and Richard Sherman (from Mary Poppins)
Mr Saggs by Chris Woods

I will do a new one for this month - possibly more than one...

Hello All,

Our modest go at Theme Vannetaise.  Will hopefully have another crack at this in a few weeks and see how we've progressed.

Gypsy's Lullaby
That's an excellent choice for this theme, and of course really well played. Pipe tunes aren't particularly easy to translate to melodeons but your subtle use of bass notes gives a drone like quality which sounds just right. Food for thought; thanks for posting.
