beards and bellows
« on: June 18, 2015, 07:29:33 AM »

As my beard is now a bit ZZ Top it is now getting caught up in the straps, hooks, buckles and bellows. I don't want to trim it down. Should I wrap it like a Sikh, plait it like a poser or take up another instrument. I could have longer straps but that would only be a temporary fix and playing the melodeon swung low like a rock guitarist would only present other problems. It needs to be fixed quickly as the banjo will also be a problem soon. Please send replies on the back of a £5 note.

Have patience. Soon you will be able to throw it over your shoulder, and use the strap to retain it.

If you play for Morris, be sure to stand downwind of the dancers to avoid the wind blowing it back. This has the added advantage that, except on the most windless of days, the dancers will always know which direction is Up when dancing outside.

Maybe you could remove the shoulder straps from the melodeon and weave some clips into the beard to use instead?

The perfect cure is a beard sock, secured behind the head with elastic straps.

Oh yes, I get one knitted in the team colours. Ah! just realised it might look like a willie warmer on my chin, I don't want to look like a d*#k head playing a melodeon. Be alright with the banjo though.

Switching to concertina would allow you to defer any radical measures. Possibly for years.

Switching to fiddle would allow you to have a perpetual supply of bow hair.

Well as you can see I have a beard .. Fair bit longer than in the pick to the left. Yepper thats me.. lol

I use a towel thin one like a tea towel and just wrap it around my neck catching my beard in it.. Works like a charm..

Also a bonus, It helps when I am sweating my butt off to collect the moisture. lol ..  :|||: :M :|bl

Well OK it is.
Moustache wax, and then set it to any angle you like, you could even rest your pint of beer on it, and not worry about it being  nicked (stolen) the beard that is ,no! The beer.  :|glug

Dear ACE I recommend a double plait with each one anchored by a cord and attached weight thrown over each shoulder. Sorry about the fiver. Could only find a tenner and wasn't going to waste that.

Don't know if Guy "GbH" Heathcote, once a regular here,  still reads melnet, but he plays melodeon despite luxuriant facial hair.

He's a regular finalist in handlebar moustache competitions.

Doesn't seem to slow him down on box at all :|glug

Dolly Parton, has even bigger problems, playing squeezeboxes. She gets her bits, all tangled up.

Her main problem though, was that her arms were too short.

ACE
I saw a clip on TV the other night of a woman standing on her hands, holding a bow and arrow with her feet and firing successfully at a target.
This might seem like a conundrum for you, but for us 'down under' it is a bit ho-hum.
I think if you stood on your head to play, then gravity would take care of the problem. It might seem difficult at first but I'm sure you would quickly adapt.

Moustache wax, and then set it to any angle you like

I would have thought reed wax more appropriate!

These chaps all have leaky bellows.
This guy has a leak in the top of his bellows:

But this chap has a leak at the top, but only plays in G major

This one plays beautifully balanced English style.

I've not quite reached Ace's beard length yet (or that of my avatar, an Arthur Rackham Nibelung) so the melodeon in not a problem but I generally do my emails, browse forums etc horizontally polarised (in bed) with laptop on chest, this last year or two the number of times I have shut it to put in the nightstand only to find that a significant chunk of fungus has been trapped - with consequent foul language - has been increasing.

There was some discussion the other evening as we watched the Hobbit film about what might choose to nest (as per the wizard Radagast) followed by some hilarity later when the hamster the kids are looking after, which had been asleep on my tum (OK shelf) vanished into the undergrowth and had to be coaxed out with some seeds, numerous embarrassing photo's might have been available but for the fact that both their camera phones suffered terminal accidental damage under my heel  8)

Keep plenty of peanut butter in it Ace, it'll stay where you put it then and you dont get bothered by wasps like with marmalade  :o

NB wasn't Dolly known as 'Pleated Parton' during her accordion playing days ?
