Swedish, Finnish,Scandinavian tunes
« on: June 19, 2015, 12:39:25 PM »

Varblomor, Boda Vals, Waltz Finlandia, Astrid Vals are the ones I am working on or know.

Any other pretty tunes to recommend? I find these tunes to be a lot of fun to play. Sad, like many French tunes.

Melodeons speak minor keys so well.

Is there one very popular one I'm missing? Varblomor & Astrid go well together, almost like variants.

Thank you, I am familiar with the title.

Isn't this AKA Vals Finlandia?

I'd suggest checking out Vicki Swann and Jonny Dyer's website and their Scandi publications.  Here's a link to their latest book, which has some lovely arrangements of (mainly Swedish) Scandinavian tunes, with CD too.  There's a huge wealth of knowledge in their books.

http://www.swan-dyer.co.uk/media/dots/scandinavian-fiddle-tunes/

They are also a lovely couple, give wonderful concerts and they hold regular Scandi sessions here in Essex at the Willows pub in Cressing.  Vicki teaches the nyckelharpa, but they are also very open to other musical instruments at their sessions.  I'm slowly working my way through the book - many are suitable for D/G/Acc boxes and many others after transposing, and I'm guessing G/C and C/F box players would also find much to entertain them.

My personal favourite is "Der Stod en Jungfrau": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdUUi-A87-s.  A better version than mine is on the CD by Tim Van Eyken and Rob Harbron.

Others that I play are:

Trollpolska (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyzopylT-Yg),
Grinds Hans Jässpödspolska (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgPOCvEFFpM)
Åre Polska (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NgJkWRD4Rw)

I've been really enjoying Irish polkas lately. This one is called "The Finnish" but I'm not sure that it is Finnish. The link has a video of a group singing the tune in Finnish so maybe it is.

Another tune that I'm more certain actually comes from Finland is the Haudanmaan Hääpolksa

Also, here's another take on Emma's waltz that Lester posted (this one is a little faster and less waltz like)

I think this forum has a three link post limit so that's it for me for now.

Do you have the sheet music to any of these? Keen to build my 'repertoire'.

I think the notation is in a different key than the videos posted above and maybe some minor difference but I believe its the same basic structure.

I like Har du fyr so much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rck1uCW50uA. Don't know why, it just speaks to me. I have been waiting to catch up with a Norwegian in my neighbourhood here in TX so she can translate the lyrics for me but if someone can help me here that would be fantastic, I created an abc file to learn it but I believe it may be copyrighted so I am probably unable to share.

Here are the lyrics in Norwegian if some kind person can help with the translation, I tried Google but I don't think it did a very good job.

HAR DU FYR

ytterst i verden ytterst i vest.
Kan hende du seile di skute.
kan hende du seile tilfeldig som gjest
kan hende du går dær i rute
uansett treng du et punkt som e fast
dær du frakte di skjøre last

deltasalmon, on that great recording of Damien Mullane playing Emma, who's playing the bass??  It's clearly live, but there's no bass player to be seen!  I thought perhaps it was an electronic bass on either the box LH or the guitar bottom string, but the rhythm 's different for both of them.  Baffled.

The biggest archive of Scandiwegian music is at http://spillefolk.dk/ .  (Not all that much Finnish/Estonian/Sami/Karelian, though).

Select "Nodesamling>Find noder".

It's superbly organized with a vast range of features, once you get the hang of it.

Good question. The typical threesome I see is Damien Mullane on the accordion, Donogh Hennessy on guitar and Trevor Hutchinson on the upright bass. This is Mike Galvin on guitar I believe and other comments I've seen on his playing ask where the bass player is.

N: Probably the best-known traditional Finnish polkka tune.
N: S\"akkij\"arvi is a small town between Leningrad/(Saint)Petersburg and the Finnish border.
N: Fourth and fifth parts are often played, which are usually "accordion showoff" parts.
N: This tune is sometimes attributed to Vili Vesterinen, but he learned it from others,
N: and was the accordion player who popularized it.

Thanks both, for the quick sharing of sheet music. I'm won over by these tunes.

I would echo Chris's recommendation about Vicki Swann and Jonny Dyer's website. That's where I took my notation from for Polska Efter Båtsman Däck, which is going down well locally. We also play Josefins Dopvals by Roger Tallroth and I have introduced Vals efter Manneberg, having first heard it played on the flute by Sarah Bauhan. Not easy but very rewarding when it goes right!

#2626- Valse à Tauno Krossi (trad)

Has a midi and tab. Time to find a real version, this one sounds nice. Mr Perroches website has very nice selections!

How about this, if you've got the accidentals?

I can't figure out how to quit but I will no longer check this group and have deleted all shortcuts to it.
