Sir Sidney Smith's March
« on: June 23, 2015, 11:59:57 AM »

I've been battling with Sir Sidney Smith for weeks now and and am now in a position where I can make a passable fist of it, except the two bits where the bass an treble side combine. I don't know a better way of describing this, but if you dig out Lester's version on YouTube and played on his (now mine) Mignon they occur at .52 and 1.45. I'm not even sure it's possible to describe but I hope someone can take a pop at it. My wife says it's deeply dispiriting to watch an old man weeping whilst clutching Mignon to his bosom..

Brian

Not sure I understand what you mean, the tune can be played in its entirety on the treble end??

If its the dubby, dubby, dubby, dubby etc bit every alternate not is a D (5 push)

Apologize to Berti for me  ;)

Ah! Lightbulb moment! Sadly Lester, I think she will never forgive you...and it will probably deepen when the Giordy you coerced me into buying arrives...

Blimey...I'm finding the dubby dubby dubby stuff quite difficult... I suppose it will sink in eventually...

This is a tune that I wouldn't care to play solo or lead, but it is coming together for me now (when joining with others); what worked for me in the dubby dubby bit was starting out by just playing the "dub" and not the "by", and getting the basses right. Then gradually I began to find I could fit in most or all of the missing notes.

Marje, that's what I seem to be doing...out of interest, how long did it take you to get this far? I think it's probably the trickiest tune I've attempted this far but to be honest I'm not terribly ambitious .Dubby dubby..I wish Lester was less prone to using techspeak....

I am a bit lazy too and I never set out to master this tune. But someone at our regular session plays it, and I just kept joining in whatever bits I could. Over the months (years?) I found it was coming together  - it took a long time but with only very occasional flurries of effort on my part. I am now feeling quite shamed and am resolved to try and work at it on my own now.

Good luck with it Marje, I'm giving up on it for the time being, it's taking the fun out of playing...

I had a little noodle at this tune again today. I remembered, when I came to it, another reason that I wouldn't play it solo - there is an F natural at one point, and my box has no accidentals. I can happily bodge my way around this when playing with others, but somebody really needs to play it.
Much the same can be said of the various other notes that I got wrong, but I do find I can manage most of them now - in fact, I find just about all of the notes are playable, although not without errors (and to quote Morecambe and Wise, "not necessarily in the right order"). Must keep trying, it's a good tune.

In case anyone's not seen it, I also have a version of Sir Sidney Smith's March on YouTube

The video resolution is good enough that you should be able to see what I'm doing if you full-screen it, but I'll happily attempt to clarify if asked.

One part that's perhaps worth mentioning is that I play quite a lot of that "dubby-dubby" bit on the D row. Playing it that way enables me to hit some E basses where the treble note is G, as part of a nice stepwise progression of bass notes a third below the moving notes of the treble part.

That's good Mel! I've been battling away on my little Mignon (If Lester can do it so can I..not!) so your video didn't hit the spot for me. However, a new Giordy will be arriving shortly and I'll have two rows to get my head round; I'm sure it will be a great help. Thank you..

Anahata,

could you possibly remove all items of DIY before making videos.

My wife spotted the cuprinol as I watched Sir Sidney Smiths finger knotting March on the laptop. It reminded her that our fence required treatment and I might better occupy myself doing that instead of making a dreadful noise. >:(

How am I supposed to continue my self tuition if people carelessly leave items like that sitting around.
