Tune of the Month for July 2015: Rose of Raby
« on: July 01, 2015, 12:31:45 AM »

(Oops, I forgot to ask Dave for permission to use his tune! - I'll drop him a message in a bit!) Assuming it's ok, this month's winner is Rose of Raby - written by Dave Shepherd, I don't think it's stretching things to call this mazurka a classic. Here's Derek to show us how it's done! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J9TtBG3l-4 And here, it is again, played by Dave himself and Anna Pack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb460hMHqrE

I suspect there is the possibility to do some wacky cross fingered bass/chord combinations on this tune if you wish; could anyone who's been there/done that give us a quick summary of what some of them are please?

Cheers,

Clive

Delighted to kick this one off - I learnt this tune earlier this year so knocked out a version last night. Interested to see what others make of but in the mean time here's mine:

Really looking forward to hearing everyone's versions this month. Here's mine, which I recorded ten days ago. http://youtu.be/bb7Db9FGU2o

Good luck! It's a lovely tune to play.....

Any chance of the abc for this tune? Or have I missed it?

Searching for the sheet music throws up quite big differences in the printed music. The music I used, here: http://p2.storage.canalblog.com/26/62/123297/12376528.pdf
shows rhythmic differences, (as well as wrongly attributing it to the pen of Andy Cutting!), to other versions such as this one: http://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=thesession.org/tunes/7885.no-ext/0002
The notes are the same, only the rhythm is different.

I chose to play the first one because I felt it had a slight swing to it, which I thought enhanced the tune a little. It would be interesting to know which version Dave Shepherd actually wrote.

Arty, I would say you're playing something inbetween the two different notations (with nicely keeping the special character of the triads), and that's perfectly fine. I guess I'll prefere the notation from thesession.org because it works better as a starting point for diversifying the pulse due to the indifference of the 3/4 signature for me. Suits your waltz-ish approach (which I really enjoyed) well too IMO...

The version Dave Shepherd wrote is available in the book 'Blowzabella - New Tunes for Dancing' ISBN 0-9549013-0-4.
I can't reproduce it here for copyright reasons but it is under the section 'Mazurkas' and is in Gm.

If Dave Shepherd is happy about us using it as ToTM he'd quite possibly prefer that we had the correct version to work from, so it might be worth seeking permission to reproduce it here.

Meanwhile, perhaps you could hint at which of the versions cited above is closer to the original  ;)

Still haven't heard back from Dave. In the meantime, I dare say the Dave/Anna video is as definitive as we're going to get!

Looking at the different versions presented, I don't mind the rythmic variations, they're pretty personal anyway. What I finding more interesting are the modal differences between them. there are settings which, if the root note is standardised to E, are in one sharp, two sharps and no sharps.

I didn't notice this as yet, but the harmony of the contributions so far is differering as well since some are giving the B-section a Dorian touch by applying a IV-chord (Cmaj whith G as root) inspite their playing a tune in Gmin natural...

This is one of our regular session tunes at Bath, so I only had to practise those tricky triplets.
My chords are a bit different from the composer's (as in the BZB tunebook), but I like them.
I've always imagined the tune as very smooth, so Dave's emphatic playing with Anna was a surprise. Better for dancing I expect.

If Jack can play it in Gm on a CF does that mean that Am is doable on a D/G or would it be better to shift it down to Em?

Emin would at least be easier (with good options for harmony) with 8 standard basses, I'm playing the tune in Cmin on my Bb/Eb now myself... (otherwise you'd have to fake even the tonic chord).

...........

I'm not a sight reader, and have only spent a few mins comparing, but to me the archive.folx.org version in the post above looks very much the same as the Blowzabella book rhythmically, although it's in Am (book is Gm). However the B part in that version looks closest (identical?) to what the Blowzabella book calls the "Alternative B Music", and so there's another B part variation. I'd suppose the Richer Dust L.P. / Wars of the Roses version would be the original. This youtube suggests a connection to Blowzabella from the username https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZRwNPVOwpc&index=4&list=PLV47Z1ykootM6jmhm87hrTClrN_mbsf5Q (fantastic L.P.)
Sorry, I'm not much help, merely a bit tantalising I know...
