Theme of the Month for July 2015: Runners Up
« on: July 01, 2015, 12:37:27 AM »

I'm going to steal this great idea from concertina.net! Go back through goodness who knows how many polls, and choose a tune that never won, and play it for us! There are some great, great tunes amongst that lot, and a few of which I have absolutely no idea how they didn't manage to get selected; show us what we missed!

Happy fishing!

Clive

Oh, good! Having lurked on this site for quite a long time before finally signing on last year, I have some catching up to do. I feel a bit like a kid in a candy store.

Here's a classic American (well, Texas...) tune to kick off the Fourth of July weekend. I gather that in the TOTM polls it's been often a bridesmaid but never (?) a bride.

http://youtu.be/Qyqhhpxn_SI

It's wildly popular here and is probably the tune I most often hear other players describe as "my favorite waltz." Certainly it's in my top five or so.

Very nice Bob - I enjoyed that! Is that a Maugein box?

A couple of versions of Jody Kruskal's very distinctive tune "Pixie Wings" - a runner-up TOTM a couple of years ago.

Just recorded, on a CF Sandpiper:

On a GC Lilly a year ago, played (I think) too fast:

Thanks! Yes, it's a Maugein. I bought it fourteen years ago (I think it was) from Jim Coogan, who used to come down from New York State to the Philly Ceili Club Festival each fall with some boxes to sell. Jim was a big fan/promoter of Maugeins, but since his death I don't know of a dealer in this country who regularly carries them.

Rummaging through the also-rans from previous TOTM polls over the weekend, I came across an old favorite and decided to try it on the C#/D box.

http://youtu.be/IYP5UsfJMpY

I've heard it played in sessions occasionally over the years, though it's not as commonly known in the States as it seems to be in the UK. I'm pretty sure I first learned it in the late '70s from a High Level Ranters LP, and I play it here as remembered (always a dicey proposition).

Just chose the most recent runner up that appealed.

Another old favorite from the backlist, "The Belfast Hornpipe":

http://youtu.be/uJKfaAyw3Pg

Setting aside the pipes, which are sort of in their own category, I can't think of an instrumental pairing I like better for Irish traditional tunes than melodeon/button accordion (preferably tuned a bit wetter than the one played here) and banjo. The runners-up, to my ear, would be 1) fiddle and flute and 2) two concertinas.

I didn't know Midnight on the Water before. It became my favourite waltz.

This is a very fine example of playing an Irish hornpipe, very relaxed and straight forward!

Setting aside the pipes, which are sort of in their own category, I can't think of an instrumental pairing I like better for Irish traditional tunes than melodeon/button accordion (preferably tuned a bit wetter than the one played here) and banjo. Three good choices IMO, and the top one really works here (albeit I agree as to the "wetter" tuning)!

Best wishes - Wolf

Come on folks, get those submissions in before you all disappear to Sidmouth!  ;)

Here's my effort this month; La Choca, which in April 2012 lost by the smallest margin imaginable!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KDPltlZNdM

Learned from the playing of Chris Wood and Andy Cutting at a Folkworks week a *long* time ago. Here played on my (ex Guy's) 18 bass Van der Aa in G/C/#, newly back from a serious bit of overhauling/customisation at Theo's - it's sounding great - thanks Theo!

Recorded with no reverb/effects at all; what you hear is what you get in the flesh, so to speak...

Cheers,

Clive

What a great tune Clive! Some rather tricky bellows reversals to get the hang of. I like the simplicity of your version compared the old Cutting/Wood duet on youtube - it really brings out the brilliant interplay between the melody & the rhythm. Are there any other versions of this tune kicking around?

Thank you :-) I believe there's a DTN video of this somewhere on youtube; there's also a live Chris Wood/Andy Cutting version about on youtube too. Bellows reversals are rather easier when you have a heavily customised unisonoric bass setup (hee hee!), but it's perfectly playable on a standard 2 row 8 bass.

Cheers,

Clive

That's lovely Clive, I knew the VdA was going to good hands and be played properly sometime!

Very nice to hear the result of my labours.  And thanks for recording without reverb, so much nicer to my ear.

Yes, I like the directness of the sound. What are the reed settings - one M reed? It's certainly a very dry sound.
