Antti Paalanen
« on: July 15, 2015, 11:53:24 PM »

I was at the Kihaus festival in Finland a week or so back, and amongst the many wonderful things I saw and heard there (the main draw being Värttinä headlining in their home village) was this extraordinary performer, who, armed only with a 3-row Castagnari, a microphone for some growly vocals and a heavily amplified stomping foot, was making some rather compelling dance music - that's dance music in the club / rave sense rather than the kind more usually discussed here. Not usually my sort of thing, but he was very impressive. Another product of the Folk Music department of the Sibelius Academy. Probably not to everyone's taste here, but worth a look for the more adventurous. Never seen or heard a box being played quite like this before.

I found a few videos on YouTube:

This guy is not only a virtuoso, he also knows music inside out, his sense of rhythm is stunning, and his creativity and his colleague's production is also seriously good.  His taste in suits is maybe questionable, and choice of video shots also slightly pseudy, but I'm not complaining, it adds to the atmosphere!

Have done just that, and he is stunningly good.  Kids of the sixties/seventies will remember Terry Riley, doing much the same things on an electronic organ. I've checked out Antti's website, but is he playing somewhere soon where I could go and see him, do you know?

truly wonderful stuff, and exemplary of what you can do if you regard the box as a whole thing, without preconceptions. A young friend Manu, Catallan clarinetist went to the Sibelius and does similar with his instrument.

it also reminded my of Jac Lavergne, posted enthusiastically here in 2012, but they all have own style.

Limited video cover her, and a sleeping daughter. May post more when I get back, so far this looks ace!

It is minimalist. If you like Terry Riley also check out David Bedford (especially the sax quartet) also Graham Fitkin (more recent). He wrote STUB for the sax quartet I was in in the 90s. Lots of good stuff since then.
