Tune of the Month for August 2015: Dribbles of Brandy
« on: July 31, 2015, 11:03:12 PM »

Here we are folks - this month's winner!

Dribbles of Brandy - a lovely old jig, here ably played and demo'd at slow speed by Gavin Atkin - cheers Gavin! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9RcRloiRwo . Also known as 'Brothers in York'.

I know lots of you are on hold/at Sidmouth/Whitby this month, but why not have a quick go anyway? Doesn't have to be a finished article; see what you can do with whatever time you can grab!

This tune fits (as I recall) quite nicely on a 2 row 8 bass box, and is a lovely little jig.

Cheers,

Clive

What a lovely waltz (I might be stealing that idea...)!

Best wishes - Wolf

P.S.: Will you post it in ThOTM too? 8)

I would welcome some abc and its source, as all the versions I've found so far are in Em with a D# in place of a D nat

Setting 2 is without d#. Or use any version and just play d  ;D

Just for variety, here it is in Bm, played on a one-row in C:

Sigh. That's what comes of playing the D one-row ten times as often as the C. A minor, of course.

Cheers Bob - that's pretty impressive! Never thought it would fit a one row like that!

Hi folks, here's my go at this - as is the case for many of you, this is a busy month, so it's a simple straight take without anything terribly unusual.

Played on a Hohner Pokerwork in D/G.

Cheers,

Clive

Over on the Roland FR18D discussion - http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,7311.0.html - we’ve been experimenting with a sound expansion taken from Dallape Accordions.

I’ve recorded Dribbles of Brandy several times using different options from this sound set. Full technical details on the FR18D discussion.

https://youtu.be/Zeir3LunS0Y

At the same time I’ve set up the 18 bass in a way that I find useful in this tune.
My most-used acoustic melodeons have 12 bass and both came with the standard 8 towards the top of the instrument.  I see that more modern instruments come with the standard 8 at the bottom.

However, this  setup gives me Bb, F and Eb, F# on the extra 4 and being where they are, it gives me Gm by using the G bass and adjacent Bb chord, Dm by using the D bass and adjacent F chord and Cm by using C on the push and the adjacent Eb chord.

Being used to this, I’ve kept it the same on the Roland and added Bm and Am, F#m and G(pull), Ab and C#m on the extra 6 buttons. So I have the option, for example, of getting Bm and Am by taking out the 3rds or cross fingering or using the extra buttons.

The attached pdf shows the chords I’ve used.

Here's mine.
I thought I knew this tune, but I don't actually play it much and was struggling with the B music. Eventually, with some desperately slow practice at half speed or less I got a usable take.

Interesting to read on another posting elsewhere that it is a Christmas tune. Anyway, here's my attempt!

I really enjoyed playing about with this tune. I feel like I could easily spend another few weeks on it polishing it up, but here's what I've got so far:

(Note to self: must learn how to use the stupid air button properly!)

That was great Butimba!  A lot of thought and work has gone into that; very nice.

Nice! I particularly like the chords right at the end of the B part.

Thank you! - and I like your variations too. As Bavarian Pete said: a lot of work has gone into that.

Yes, I know that feeling!
If you can stand it, it's worth a try.

Hi guys!

Here is my try of this powerful jig:
https://youtu.be/fxTvjfpU4QI

- - -
Since I couldn't learn and record rose of raby in July, I decided to play it together with dribbles of brandy, and so here it is also:
https://youtu.be/8LQlk0bOwnU
It took me a while to learn it, and many takes to play it straight... But it was worth, it's a lovely tune.

Thanks folks - that's all for this month; got a new tune to learn now! Late additions as ever - just stick them on the end of this thread.

Cheers,

Clive
