The latest ad for DiscoverIreland features a melodeon - briefly - here's the link. I'm sure someone better than I can say what make it is.

That makes me think of Benjamin Macke who plays the melodeon to silent films!

This is very cool. I did a piece with Ken Sparne (http://steveaitch.wordpress.com/2009/08/06/nowt-press/) at Bradford College where I improvised a musical interaction with archive film using melodeon.

I didn't know of 'Benjamin Macke' so I Googled the name and found this site:

Heh. I was musical director of a show in Edinburgh which involved me playing music on box to a silent play. :P

Heaven's Gate

I just watched the Michael Cimino Western film "Heaven's Gate" recently.  The film is notorious for being a huge expensive flop, bankrupting the United Artists company.  There is a kind of wacky scene in the film of a large crowd of people in a roller rink hall.  The scene starts off with a fiddler skating around playing a fiddle tune.  The skater then joins the band to play the same tune with a cajun beat.  In the band is someone playing a one row box with 4 stops.  The crowd proceeds to dance to the music on skates.  Later the two principle actors do a waltz on the floor after the crowd clears out. While Heaven's Gate is beautifully filmed, the scenes are disjointed and it is mostly boring in my opinion. I can see why the critics panned it.  Charlie

Anthony Bourdain did one of his shows in Louisiana on the Travel Channel. They went to a hog killing near Eunice and there was a band outside, looked like Marc Savoy was playing the box.

Not exactly sure where this thread is going, but randomonium is like the glue that holds the universe together. I noticed an accordionist strolling through the garden during the shower scene in Bridesmaids. He seemed to avoid most of the carnage.

Found two more.  ;D

John Ford's The Searchers and the Kubrick/Brando masterpiece One-Eyed Jacks both have scenes with melodeons. In the former, a musician is shown playing what looks like a 1905 Hohner 1-row Vienna box, even though the year is supposed to be 1873 (the film starts in 1868, the characters wander in search of revenge for five years). Interestingly, in One-Eyed Jacks, the accordion played in the gazebo during the Monterey fiesta looks like it could have been made circa 1890 so it's not the glaring anachronism that appears in Ford's film.

Both were filmed in the short-lived VistaVision format. They're tough, nail-biter style westerns with excellent scripts, direction, and photography. I highly recommend both films, even if you don't like westerns.

Gummo - Harmony Korine (1997)

Lonely residents of a tornado-stricken Ohio town wander the deserted landscape trying to fulfill their boring, nihilistic lives.

Class!  :||: :||: :||: Completely forgot about Gummo (if memory serves, no accordions present but Harmony Korine's Mister Lonely is very good with added bonus of Werner Herzog cameo).

I've just watched an old episode of 'Foyles War', the last episode where he goes off to the USA.  It began in a bar in Dresden, and I spotted Tim Van Eyken in a corner, playing and singing along to a very modern looking Saltarelle!!

UK period TV series "Larkrise to Candleford" has plenty of Melodeon scenes, one episode revolved around a guy from the country village of Larkrise getting his back from the pawn shop (edited Misspelling - Thanks Mike) in Candleford so he could go Wassailing.

It`s set in the late 1800s . there`s only one Melodeon in the series and it`s seen and heard all throughout the series in various jigs and events, amazingly its a 2 Row which must have cost the lad a month or two`s wages working in the field..

I think you will find that a 'porn shop' is very different from a 'pawn shop'.  :|bl

John Wayne film the other day "The Quiet Man",  alledgedly Irish setting.  The box player was so fast, you couldn't see his fingers move AT ALL.  Why can't they find extras that can actually play the damned thing?

Nobody's mentioned the excellent new Aardman film "The Pirates!: In An Adventure with Scientists"?

None of the pirates have real names so they are all referred to by their characteristics - one's 'thing' is that he never puts his Melodeon down - it's in every scene!

Does it not count cos it's animated? I liked it!
