Counting folds
« on: May 20, 2009, 07:30:12 PM »

OK, I'm suffering from a bout of amnesia deja-vu. ie. I think I forgot this before!

How do you count the number of bellows folds?
Do you count the outer folds (peaks) with the shiny corner bits? If so, do you include the two end ones that are glued to the frames?
Or, do you count the inner folds (troughs)?

e.g. A bellows with 16 peaks (or 18 if you count the 2 end ones) has 17 troughs.
Does it have 16, 17 or 18 folds?

If you are specifying for new bellows to be made its 18.

Any offers on 17? There must be someone out there depressed enough to count the troughs not the peaks.  >:E

Ah yes, just checked my last Italian bellows order and 18 is correct, so first prize of a leaky gusset goes to Theo.
I knew I knew it but I didn't know what!

Rummaging through the box for a consolation prize for Lester - umm.... there's some fluff cleaned from between John K's bellows folds, a picture of Dave Townsend naked, Simon Care or a crocodile hat. Your choice.

standard procedure for concertinas is simply to count the ridges and not the ends that are attached to the endframes. Hence I would describe my wheatstone EC as having 8 fold bellows. I just assumed that it would be the same for accordions? Obviously not.

Phew, narrowly escaped the second prize.  The thought of that choice brings me out in a cold sweat.

Yes, you're a lucky man. Leaky gusset in the post.

Sorry my answer came from the concertina world where, as Al says, we don't count the ends so I was right but in the wrong place.

Would genuine JK bellow fluff improve my playing?
