Tune of the Month for September 2015: The Recruiting Officer
« on: September 01, 2015, 12:48:12 AM »

This month's winner, by a pretty large margin, is The Recruiting Officer - thanks for this suggestion Pete! Pete says:

Quote

I've got to confess this is a new one to me, so I've no idea how it plays or how to approach it... yet. I guess we'll all find out together eh?

Lovely!

When I saw the landslide building last week and decided to go ahead and learn the tune, I reached for the one-row as well:

I've really enjoyed this this tune but had a little trouble finding a rhythm and pace. It came together when I picked up the Erica and added the guitar (and my son Tom).

Isn't this a Playford tune?

A slight variant of this tune was published in Playford 2 which has only just been transcribed in the last few months so very few people will know of it. It predates the Wm.Vickers manuscript of 1770 by many years (I'm not sure about which of the Aird's Airs books it appeared in). The version presented here was from the Vickers manuscript but I'm sure any of the versions would be welcome, here's the Playford version.

Here is the version from Aird's Airs Vol. 1 1778 (often cited as 1782) so it is the most recent of the old manuscript versions I'm aware of. Transcription courtesy of Jack Campin.

Pete,
Is the last bar correct? The A is the middle comes out a bit on the low side.

Yes, that's how it looks on my software - just wondered because it looks very lonely down there.

Here's my effort, don't remember playing this one before so fortified myself with a bottle of red beforehand (hic!)  :|bl

Good excuse to have a play around with Audacity though.

Great contribution, the bottle of red seems to have a booster effect  (:)

Thanks very much for this Pete. I already played a setting of this on the mandola and I struggled to work out this setting  from a manuscript scan I found browsing for the tune. I have finally pinned down a splendid site that seems to have the whole of the 3 Payford volumes on it. I think someone actually gave me a link which led me in this direction a while ago.

Do you know if this is the earliest extant publication. If so, I would think this was "the  tune" and everything else a variant on this setting. I know it from Joshua Jackson's manuscript, in which it is a fairly early entry, putting that setting in the first quarter of the 19thC.

For some reason my favourite efforts to play it keep coming out with something of a rolling waltz feel to them (if that isn.t a garbage thing to say of an early 18thC tune). Certainly feels more like two 3/4 cycles than one 6/4 to the bar.

If I can sort out my computer in time I'll try and record a version.

Here we go folks - my quick stab at this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtLq0YC_5es

played in D *and* G on a D/G/Acc Hohner Lucia. I don't know about you, but I expected this tune to drop quickly to hand; it didn't though - took a bit of perseverence to get through that 2nd bit.

Cheers,

Clive

Well done, good interpretation. I'm not yet ready to record mine, I need to train myself again !!!

What kind of accordion do you play, it looks like diatonic on the right and chromatic on the left hand side. Is it popular in UK? I saw only one time a player with such instrument in France but it's really.

Thank you - the accordion is a Mixte system; D/G/Accidental system on the right hand side, 4x12 stradella on the left. This particular one is a Hohner Lucia conversion (it was originally a small B system chromatic); Lucia's are rare, but wonderful small chromatics with a very good action that makes them very good for conversion. John Spiers (Squeezy) has one as well, as well as a Cordelia (3 voice version, Lucia's are 2 voice boxes). The conversion on mine and Squeezy's was done by Mike Rowbotham.

Cheers,

Clive
