ok, thanks.....
so do I understand it as holding down a melody button and with a quick bellows flick you get the note held down + next up the scale + original note as you quickly push/pull/push in a flick?

its litteraly just a VERY quick 'back  flick'  of the bellows so you would get eg  GaG instead of plain G!

It works well and is easy on the A part of Blaydon races or cock of the north  and depends on delicate use of the wrist  whilst at the same time using the arm movement for the direction  of the''original'' note

I did a workshop on the backflick at Whitby ?3 or 4 years ago

Yep.... that's what I thought, just wasn't sure how to express it.
Thanks George for confirming.......

Sorry - very loose term as it also gets used for slipping the air valve a bit.

I was referring to the little bellows licks that DTN is so skilled at, and that turn notes into three, with added rhythm and attitude.

its litteraly just a VERY quick 'back  flick'  of the bellows so you would get eg  GaG instead of plain G!

Oh - you mean mini-waggles, a.k.a wagglets;D

It's actually easier with a larger sized box, as you can set up the mini-waggles as a bit of a standing wave on the bellows. A bit harder to do with a diddy box like a Lily.

Having trouble narrowing down onto a particular obscure tune. All of my tunes are obscure, it feels like.

I'm with Gary on this one. "Obscure" seems to be the reliable common denominator of my tastes and interests...

But here's my attempt at John J. Kimmel's "Medley of Straight Jigs":

http://youtu.be/-JBNanlmHXs

Its qualifications for this month's Theme: a) I don't think I've ever heard it played live; b) it's only been recorded a handful of times (notably by Joe Derrane, as "Kimmel's Accordion Fantasy") since the 1908 original; c) hardly anyone has covered it on YouTube; d) even the most obsessive tunehounds in my circle seem to stop well short of my Kimmel enthusiasm. If that's not obscure, it will have to do until obscure comes along.

Needless to say, I can't play it anything like the master, who probably manages three notes for my every one. Think of it as an homage from a mere carbon-based life form.

My interpretation is a tune that has been recorded once on a melodeon, but doesn't come up anywhere else on youtube/soundcloud clip . La 500/Bec a Bec (shouldn't it be Les Cinq Cents?) as played by La Chavanne does actually appear in the iTunes store in Canada, so it's definitel not that "obscure". I felt that Thrupenny Bit's interpretation deserved more attention as I think it sounds really good on the melodeon. On the other hand I have no idea how well-known the tune may be to other Melnetters.

I never understand how the weird algorithms on youtube work. I was looking at Clive's (delightful) clip of "The Recruiting Officer" last night & the video that popped up next to it was this one (Viewer Discretion Advised):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbGJOUeVWSs     :o

Does that happen to everyone ... or just me?!

I never understand how the weird algorithms on youtube work.

It seems to be mixture of "related to the video being shown" and "what YouTube thinks you like based on your viewing history" - as far as I can tell. There might be a bit of "where other viewers went next after watching this video" in it, which would explain some of the more bizarre recommendations.

Obscure tunes - a ( maybe obvious )point to add is the regional differences in repertoires. Bound to be getting less now with the web and the number of festivals where tunes can be shared - but also repertoires change through time as new collections of tunes are unearthed - and of course great tunes are written eg La cinq-cents ( correct me if I am wrong but named after a motor-bike)..

Off to practice me wagglets and obscure tunes - and maybe think of starting a thread on warm-ups for melodeon playing if not discussed before.

Thanks to you I read about Kimmel some weeks ago. His playing sounds indeed very interesting. In this video on Youtube Raynald Ouellet speaks about a double CD in memoriam of John J. Kimmel, but I couldn't find any more information about this CD. Could you point me to it, maybe?

Ok...there's a first time for everything...forgive the dodgy start...youtubevirgin. :|bl

Mobberley Rose Queen Festival is in its 93rd year.  Certain dances are danced every year including the Boys' (although now danced by girls) and Girls' hornpipes.  The tune for the boys' hornpipe is a variant ofThe Trumpet and involves much triple tonguing and red faces from the band.  This is the tune for the girls' dance and I have yet to hear it played anywhere else...but would love to be proved wrong.  Totally gratuitous key changes.  Lighting effects and "ping" courtesy of halogen oven.

More Mobberley obscurity when I've got over the shock...

I think I bought mine (stateside) from the Button Box, where it appears to be in stock:

http://www.buttonbox.com/music-cds.html#cdqueb

The Musée de l'accordéon in Montmagny also lists it:

http://www.accordeonmontmagny.com/mda/1-24or2c-john-j-kimmel-un-heritage-fabuleux-2-disques-compacts/

It's a pity the set isn't more widely distributed, since it's wonderful old music and the performances really are extraordinary. But the style seems to be...what's that word? Obscure.

Glass Island Reel which an autoharp playing friend, (Cliff Lashmar), brought to a recent bluegrass session. Composed in 1997 this was the first tune Ethan Hazzard-Watkins wrote which he says developed from a liking for the Em-C-D chord progression. There is a cracking hammered dulcimer version on YT . Something of a study for minor scale, arpeggio and triplet playing but still fun.

Best regards

More Mobberley Merriment...

Again always played in the village for the Maypole (even though the festival's in June...) and one I've not heard elsewhere.

Played AABC for the dance, but if one were to play AABBCC it makes quite a nice 48 bar polka.  Played in EB/Bb because on the day all the dances are danced to a brass band...(memo to self...must get those left hand buttons bushed...)

That's probably it for another few years  :|glug

Looks and sounds great!  I also got my one de-clubbed as well (same reason).
