Nice, but surprisingly not particularly rare - it is one of two on UK ebay at the moment.  The other one is a more ornate version, and includes a nice wooden case.

I'd not seen one quite like it before Theo - likewise not considered Nottingham to be part of the Castelfidaro / Klingenthal group of ear assulting areas  ;)

Not that I'm thinking of having a punt but what do they sound like tone wise compared to their continental equivalents ? any good? or is that too open ended a subjective query..........

They were made in Paris in the second half of the 19th century.  The construction has more in common with a concertina than with a melodeon.  Single reed per note, and individual reeds in dovetailed slots, like an English built concertina. They have a sweet but quiet sound. They use a push pull system but the opposite way round with tonic on pull.

The Nottingham connection is reckoned to be a connection with the lace industry where there were strong trading links between there and Paris, and some enterprising lace traders branched out into French accordions. So the Nottingham labels refer to an importer or retailer. The maker is usuall Busson, Paris.

Thanks for the clarification Theo, knowing Nottingham for lace and the support of its manufacturing machinery I wondered if some clever chap had spread out into box making (reeds and leaf springs not being such distant cousins) but merchants value adding badge engineering makes sense and has been with us for donkeys years.

Sounds a little bit up the food chain from the single plate Saxonian boxes and bound to become someones new treasure  ;)
