Them fiddley Pokerwork bass buttons
« on: May 20, 2009, 09:02:39 AM »

Having kicked a couple of my bass buttons to buggery (whilst playing a particularly rousing fiddle set), I got a few replacements (thanks Theo). I'm having trouble putting the new ones on. I managed to get the one nearest to the strap changed, using a knife to cut a groove in the button, long nose pliers and a lot of force, but really struggled with a button on the inside row, as any force can easily bend the metal arm.

What is the orthodox way of putitng new bass buttons on?

No getting away from it but it's an awkward job.

Possible approaches:

  • pull out the pin that holds the rod in place and with draw rod then you have good access to the end of the rod, downside is that the pin may break when you put it back, so now need to find a new pin of the correct diameter.
  • use a screwdriver with about the same width as the end of the rod to force a slot in the base of the button
  • use a hot soldering iron to enlarge the hole
  • drill out the hole then use araldite to secure the button

Ordinary gardening galvanised steel wire - the thin stuff - is about the right size if the pins break.
