Poll: Tune of the Month for October 2015
« on: September 27, 2015, 02:09:06 AM »

Hi folks - here we are again; what tune shall we choose this time? Choices are:

Moulin Rouge - last month's runner up and a lovely parisian waltz; simple, well known (the tune anyway), and fits on a melodeon beautifully. What's not to like? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOCIkP0xucU

Esperanze, thank you Christophe for your nomination; this tune was written by great French player, Marc Perrone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQecKFasWTM

... and thank you Happy Wonderer for suggesting Maple Sugar - I've found a melodeon video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTAEkfi5hYA though there seem to be quite a few variations.

... and finally, how about the Lemonville Jig? Great little jig from Canada, here played by McGrooger (first tune) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnbcwXJg_DY and demonstrated slowly by Gavin Atkin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYKFRMdd32s

There you are folks; happy voting!

Cheers,

Clive

I would really like to vote for Marc Perrone's 'Esperanza', but I have a problem. The music requires a G# on the push against an E bass/chord but, on both my G/C instruments, I have a G# on the pull. I can't think of a way around this, especially as that G#, E bass seems crucial to the mood of the piece.
Any ideas? Or should I just vote for something else?

Did we not have Lemonville Jig in July 2012?

I did a quick search and found my contribution at the time
http://youtu.be/P-zVfXgabyg

No reason of course not to have it again.

What we could do with is an index of all the tunes  ;)

Now you mention it, and with the help of Lester's list, I've found the thread and discovered I played it then too - I'd completely forgotten  :|bl

This is indeed a pb. You can maybe try with a D bass, I'm not sure of the result.

I did this following  a Pentreffest Fest Noz with Mark Prescott, just a load of mandolins to hear the harmony parts, 3 melodeons would be something!

Thanks Christophe but I have tried every bass/chord available to me and nothing sounds right to my ears.
I believe Marc Perrone plays a 4 row Castagnari, so I would guess he has every note/bass/chord known to man in every direction! I just have a 2 row, so there will be things I can't do and I guess this is one of them. Now I feel strangely inadequate  :(

I have a G/C box set up like that, and I've been thinking of turning the reed plate over so the G♯ is a push note.
I believe many French players of G/C with chin end accidentals have them set up that way.
Both my D/G boxes have the equivalent (D♯ on push)

The main disadvantage is you can't play C7 or Dmin RH chords but you'll probably find more French tunes in A minor than music that really needs those other chords.

Thank you Anahata, that is certainly a thought I will keep in mind. Esperanza is the first time I have come up against this problem - if it comes up again, I will probably consider doing that.

Yes you're right, Marc Perrone plays on a 4 rows G/C/F/Alt and for sure he has G# in both directions. This is bad luck for you, I have a 2,5 rows G/C box and the G# is on push. and btw this is logical because I have 12 basses/chords and G# is also on push on the left hand side.
Anyway this is only part of the best practices and there is no rules, this note is out of the G and C scales.

Turning your reed plate is maybe the option, depending if you need it on pull or not for other tunes.

Esperanza - by the man himself!

Learning this tune makes my brain hurt but is great for making me use the accidentals. Utube shows quite a range of versions, I will be happy with a basic one  :Ph

Looking forward to an Esperanza win! Just found a "tutorial" version for 3 row, 12 bass.  In the second part he plays much more slowly.
In DG-speak, it looks like he is playing E minor fingering in the top octave.
And he's playing Brotto-style ornaments slow enough to see what is going on. Rather challenging. :Ph

If Lemonville doesn't win this time, I suggest that those who voted for it, and still want to play it, add their performances to the previous Lemonville TotM thread.

Is there a recording of Lemonville played on a one row in G?
