Mouth organ workshops at Whitby folk week
« on: July 28, 2015, 04:55:51 PM »

I'll be running two workshops, focusing on playing British folk dance/ session tunes in first position (not suitable for blues).* Participants will need a 10-hole harmonica labelled in the key of G.*

Workshop 1 (Tuesday 2.30 to 3.50) is for complete beginners and will cover: holding and breathing into your instrument; layout of notes; playing single notes, some well-known tunes; care of your instrument.

Workshop 2 (Wednesday 2.30 to 3.50) will cover: articulating single notes to play the main dance rhythms; playing 'positions'; playing some popular session tunes; recordings and players to listen to.

The venue for both is West Cliff School, classroom 2.
cheers

Fingers crossed Chris. If you don't manage to get there rattle my cage at the end of August and I'll send you my handouts.

Baz - will email you 'who to listen to' stuff tomorrow.

great to have mouthie workshops again at Whitby! I was going to attempt doing one myself  but am sure yours will be much better.

The last one I can remember was many years ago by the late great Will Atkinson from whom I got many handy hints and tips.

Shall attempt to be there. If one is already a competent player (sic) Would it be best to just attend the second session?

Hi John
If you can play already, I wouldn't worry about the first one. But you can always get the handout for both. Hope to see you at no2.

Yes, the solo (actually there's some piano on it too) Will Atkinson CD is worth seeking out as the means to really hear his playing. In his recordings with The Shepherds, it's often quite difficult to hear the moothie. The newly-released Shepherds CD (Veteran) consists of live recordings and does include a moothie solo. If I remember correctly, there's also a solo Atkinson recording on the FARNE website.

I have the FARNE recordings and the CD. Both are very inspirational. George recommended us aspirational box players to listen to Will  for ideas on how to play, one year at Whitby. Thank you George!

Sorry to post on this thread again, but I've just discovered that the Whitby programme doesn't mention the need for players attending my mouth organ workshops to bring a 10-hole harmonica labelled in the key of G. So I'm just trying to spread the message!

My "G" harmonica is a long double row thing. Can I get away with using this? I'm very fond of it!  :(

That'll be fine Chris - key of G is what matters. The note layouts on tremolos (even of the same brand) can be a bit variable, so it's hard for me to make a guaranteed accurate chart before the event, but we'll be fine. Look forward to seeing you.

Coming in a bit late on the one. Good to hear that harmonica workshops are happening. If the festival next year is interested in booking a harmonica group, then my outfit, the Tony Eyers Trio, may be interested. You can see us at https://youtu.be/sJREryOweyM

I believe that the trio's travelling and accommodation expenses are very reasonable.......
