Tune of the Month for October 2015: Esperanza
« on: October 01, 2015, 11:12:40 PM »

Eek, chaps. Looks like I've got a tune to learn!

Here we are, Marc Perrone's Esperanza, as played here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQecKFasWTM

and with thanks to Christophe, some ABC

... and thanks Jack, a rather neat walk through for those of us with G/C's

https://youtu.be/_8XhyEi4s24

As Chris says, we don't have official permission on this tune yet; to be honest, I'm not sure we'll hear from Marc, but let's give him a few days grace to respond with a oui or non before posting videos; let's face it, it will take us a few days to learn it anyway!

Cheers,

Clive

After a lot of thought, I've decided I'm hearing that (as played by Marc and others) as

Harmony note:

this is classic "harmonic minor" stuff … so not "diatonic scale". In popular keys

  ABCDEFG#A   and  EF#GABCD#E

It "mainly" rock between its tonic (Am or Em) and dominant V chord made up from 4 (yes four) notes starting on note 5. In E minor that is BD#F#A which is a major chord! And this is the reason your B triad is major. Melodeons only do triads but the sharp D is enough to get leading note effect.

If someone has waxed in D# on pull … not so easy to get the chord right but the melody (IME) flows better.  Harmonic minor is only "strict" when the tune's "chord pavement" is on the dominant. Elsewhere you can slip in a "passing" D without harming the flow of notes.

Another good way to think about Esperanze is that its 'A' theme is basically up and down its i and V chords in arpeggio. Ditto those stepped descents in the 'B' music. But there are many ways to go down stairs and dominants are a great chords to "mess about" on. The only "forbidden" note is D natural which will sound sour against the B major chord.

Melnet's enquiry 'not read' as yet …

OK! So can someone give a tip on getting the rythmn right? Seems to me that's the hardest thing about this tune. The general idea of the melody looks alright on the pull across a two rows, just about. If you have a A maj on a DG box you can fudge the Am by hitting the C chord (I think), and probably do some twiddly stuff up on the dusty end.

On listening more carefully, I've realised my previous edit of Christophe's transcription left a lot to be desired in that it still didn't reflect what's actually being played on the YT videos I've seen.

Here's an edited version of the ABC, changed where the difference between the ABC and what everybody is playing seem quite consistent. Note that in contrast there are two bars in the B music where I've replaced a bunch of notes with a single long note - I think that's "correct" in that it fits Marc Perrone's singing, and typical embellishments of those bars are completely different every time, as played. So it seems to be definitely ad lib at those points.

Here's my ABC in case it helps anyone (it's the version I'm going to learn it from), and with full acknowledgement to Christophe for doing most of the hard work in the first place:
Code: [Select]
X:1
T: Esperanza
R:Scottish
C:Marc Perrone

Interesting - that is much more like Christophe's original ABC, so take my "corrected" version above with a pinch of salt. I'll leave it there, but eat humble pie for lunch today  :-[

You have indeed many alternatives as usual of the original version of Marc Perrone that you can listen here :

http://www.musicme.com/#/Marc-Perrone/albums/Voyages-0794881644629.html

If I see him tomorrow at the Accordion event of Paris, I can ask him to play the original tune for Melodeon.net ;-) he was there last year for the 100 years celebration of Castagnari, I don't know this year.

Well, we've had a week with no word, so let's proceed with this tune. Marc - should you find this thread and not want us to play your tune, please let me know and I'll remove this.

(never happened before though, so I think we're probably safe!)

Here's a version I recorded tonight - I wanted to see how convincing a version I could do on a Hohner Pokerwork without using accidentals (in the wrong direction on this box!); a combination of fudging the note, and playing other parts of the B Major chord (B and F#) rather than the missing D#.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbvTQ0_r384

It's a ridiculously catchy tune. Keeps going round and round and round and round in my head!

Cheers,

Clive

I couldn't resist seeing whether I could cut it even closer to the, er, Beaune. (Sorry.)

Hello everyone

here is my first try, this is a good exercise to record yourself, you discover some room of improvment, I'm not always in the right tempo, still need to practice ;-)

Thanks Chris for doing that for me; and thank you Marc for your kind permission! This tune is still going round and round and round in my head, and it just won't stop! Now I've got my head around it, thoughts are that it's not that hard, but it does play better in the upper register in Em on a D/G. The main D# accidental is fairly easily substituted with a B or F#, and the rest are just passing notes that can be skipped if necessary. Certain bits/phrases seem to work better across the rows, rather than in a push-pull style. Christophe and I seem to have (great recording Christophe, thanks!)  a bass rhythm that is more or less um-pah-rest-pah; the tune kind of implies it. I found it much easier doing this than a straight um-pah-um-pah rhythm - you end up kind of fighting against the melody with that. There is plenty of opportunity for funky bass runs if you fancy it in quite a few places (I do a few 2nd and 3rd times through on my version), or indeed treble based impro around the end of bars 2 and 4 in the B music.

Looking forward to hearing some more versions!

Fantastic Bob - I wouldn't have thought a one row version would even be possible, much less this good!
